Came up in another thread that perhaps there isn't any direct word? I have two in my mind but don't know the exact translations, forgive the possibly poor transliteration. Experts please expand and explain. Pete

If you were ordering a beer you would use Kor not Chuay.

There's no direct translation.

I don't know as much Thai as I should, but I believe that "kor" can be used when asking for something that you don't pay for - ie, an ashtray in a bar.
If you want a beer, you should say "ow".

Alright, my missus has corrected me. You can use both "kor" and "aw". Dosn't matter whether something is free or not.

Quite similar to please then?

In my mind "Kor Beer" is "Beer please", "Ao Beer" is "Want Beer"

Kor is a polite way of asking for something, like adding please, There's no direct equivalent as the languages have zero in common.

It's a bit like looking for a direct translation of "Khrap" There isn't one.

Since writing the above I've been told that 'chuay' really means 'help'. Which fits for me, HELP, I need a beer! Pete
