Cool Kitch’n Restaurant (Crap name)

Post by Pagey »

Located on corner of Soi 55 (Chomsin Road I think) and Nabkehard Road. From the pier walk away from the sea and it is on the junction diagonally opposite the Family Mart. I think it used to be called Grandma’s Papaya Salad Restaurant

I meant to post this when I came back from HH in August but forgot and just found the business card in my case as I pack to go back to HH again.

This place was recommended to me by a Expat Guesthouse owner with a Thai wife who had eaten there a few times.

I regularly eat at Bam Bam’s, Moon Smile & Platoo, Khun Oy, Kims Kitchen, Lek Lek etc, all places that offer a basic Thai main chicken/pork course for around 100 baht.

This place I believe offers a similar standard of food and prices but everything else is of a higher class. It is difficult to remember details now but as I recall the menu, table settings, table decoration, room decoration, water feature, plants etc all seemed to add a superior ambiance and certainly a nicer place to take a partner. Toilets spotless and well equipped (make your own jokes up here) and very unusual layout as I am sure I could see the chef whilst taking a pee !!

And real chairs BB !!

It was very quiet when I went although I went earlyish, around 5 pm but only a couple of diners, not sure why, location maybe or lack of advertising or peoples awareness of the place.

The food is all cooked behind the serving counter/bar so is visible to patrons whilst being cooked. Small seating area when you first walk in so ideal for people watching outside but opens up towards the rear of the building and plenty of room for bigger parties of diners. Thai owner and chef whom I spoke to on my second visit and very friendly and unassuming and helpful with the menu.

I went alone the 2 occasions I went so do not have the Thai perspective on the quality or taste of the food. I had rock lobster from the specials board on one occasion, 3 rock lobster and only complaint was the minimal serving of chips and vegs, only about 5 of each but at 200 Baht I thought good value. I am sure most Thai dishes of stir fry/curries etc came in at no more than 100 Baht. I have a friend visiting from BKK on Saturday so plan to take her there if the day pans out like I planned. I had a visitor from BKK last New Year and everywhere I took her nothing was ‘delicious’, not even the fruit shakes were the same as BKK. I took her to Khun Oy (my favourite place for baby clams in garlic and white wine and only 100 baht) fearing the worst as it had been slagged off in the forum by a couple of people around that time. She ordered 3 prawn dishes and halfway through I asked her what she thought and she waved her hand over the table and stated ‘all delicious’ so you never can tell !!

Newspapers and magazines to read when waiting which as I was on my own made a pleasant diversion.

I am not knocking the restaurants I mentioned earlier and all of them will get at least one visit again over the next 2 weeks but when they get busy it can be a bit cramped especially if sat near the path at Bam Bams/Moon Smile and a bit too close for people walking by for me. Exceptions would be Khun Oy which has a fair distance between tables and is a larger venue and Crepes & Cruises which probably has the best view of them all through the back and has its privacy within the Sala’s on the beach front.

I will definitely be there in the next 2 weeks and will also try Natas and Terrace 90 which have been recommended here but I have not been yet. :thumb:
