Thailand Scam Digest

Post by PeteC »

A place to list what we experience. Not for Property issues though as those can be posted elsewhere. This is for the day to day encounters we have, even if we're not positive it is a scam. Good to talk about it as others may have experience and can give guidance.

We have a possible one going now on another thread about census takers. Yet to be determined if a legitimate census, or a clever way of crooks finding out about your household and its contents.

There's another I just experienced which may be old, but it just happened to me. Mobile phone call from what was listed as 'private number'. Answer and it's a tape with a woman's voice, in Thai, saying that your credit card is 6,000 Baht overdue. Then proceeds to tell you to push 1 to enter bank details and account details so you can electronically make payment of the overdue amount.

Both of our cell phones are in the wife's name so this call was actually meant for her. She told me that it's a scam that has been talked about in the Thai newspapers for quite awhile now. No bank would ever contact you in this manner about an overdue credit card bill. Furthermore, people are getting these calls even if they have no credit card.

It appears these bad guys have access to DTAC's phone number list, or it has been sold to them. Probably true for the other mobile carriers as well.

Let's hear about some others. Pete

Have the same scam in China - but SMS. Told to call a number where again you are told you are overdue and need to provide bank details etc.

No doubt a very real scam in Thailand also.
