Three football (soccer to us Yanks) questions

Post by Homer »

After two years in SE Asia football my interest is still growing. Maybe someday I'll watch a complete game when it isn't either world cup or I'm stuck in a bar because it's raining. Anyway, I'm unclear on the concept of an own goal. Is any goal where the ball last touched a player of the team who's goal it is considered an own goal? For example, a defensive player who isn't the goalie deflects a sure goal into the back of a defenseman and the ball rebounds into the goal. Or is it an own goal, but one with no shame attached?

I hesitate to ask this question on a forum where there are so many Brits ... but here goes. What league consistently has the highest quality matches?

Finally, wouldn't the game be much better if the defensive side had to send a player out every time the ball passed the center circle onto their side of the field, with the player coming back in when the ball returned to the other half of the field, so it was always 11 offensive players against 10 defenders? ;-)

I have a (soccer) question too.

In the U.K. do the fans actually watch the game or do they just go there to get drunk and sing together? :? :D :D :D :P
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Yes they never watch the game and have a good sing song threatening the opposing fans, great fun all in jest :D You can't drink alcohol whilst watching the game. They just go to get rid of 60USD or more depending on the team in 90 minutes. Dirt cheap!

Well, not being a devout supporter or master of ''Wendyball'', I may have a couple of points wrong but........

1. An own goal in the strictest sense of the word would surely be if it last touched a defending player (with the exception of the goal keeper unsuccessfully attempting a save). Of course the spoilt, overpaid, pompous little sh*te taking a shot and having it deflect off a defending player would obviously claim the goal as his own in order to keep up his goal bonus and avoid his perceived poverty line of 100K a week.

2. A strange question indeed considering the existence of the ''Teejac Gwynedd League''!! Who could possibly forget such classic confrontations such as Holyhead Hotspur vs Llanfairfechan OR Llanystumdwy vs Gwaichmai??? Unforgettable!! :D

3. I'll leave that one to others...... probably couldn't make it much worse! :duck:

If it was clearly goalbound anyway it would go to the striker.

The English Premier League and the Spanish La Liga are generally considered the best two leagues in the world.

For technical football I'd say la liga, for pure entertainment and blood and thunder it's the English Premier League, which is why it's the most watched and the most lucrative.

   :tsk: :tsk:

I actually squirmed a little reading this.

Also, If the ball is heading into the goal when the oppositions player touches the ball then it is 99% given to the striker. If it is going wide/missing and then hits an opposition player then it is 99% deemed an OG.
