Thailand's 'jobless' premier to see the world

Post by dr dave soul monsta »

Bangkok - Thailand's billionaire caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra intends to see the world now that he is 'jobless,' the premier told reports on Saturday.

'I will travel all over the world, now I am jobless,' Thaksin told reporters before playing golf with some senior members of his Thai Rak Thai party, The Nation news website reported.

Thaksin, 56, confirmed that he intended to travel to England this month and would visit Germany in June to attend the World Cup.

Thaksin on Tuesday night announced that he would not accept a third term as prime minister, despite his party's victory at a snap polls on Sunday.

The announcement followed an audience with Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej Tuesday evening.

Thaksin qualified his resignation, however, saying he would stay on as caretaker premier until a new parliament is set up and would thereafter remain the leader of the Thai Rak Thai Party, which is expected to hold 499 out of 500 seats in the next Lower House.

Mass demonstrations have been held in Bangkok calling for Thaksin's resigntion since late January, citing eveidence that he has abused his five years in office to benefit his family's businesses at the expense of national interests.

Thaksin became Thailand's first billionaire premier in 2001. He began his career as a police officer, later diversifying into computer sales and finally earning billions off government concessions in the newly opened telecommunications sector.
