Bangkok of Olde

Post by PeteC »

Some 19th century photos primarily taken in Bangkok, along with reference to a commemorative book you can buy that contains many more. Pete

"Today marks the 100th commemoration of the passing of King Chulalongkorn, and this beautiful 179-page compilation is filled with more than 190 privately owned rare images of the royal family, ceremonies, temples, palaces, fashion, transportation, Chao Praya River, scenes of daily life and the ethnic diversity found in the Kingdom at the time....."

There is also an exhibition in Bangkok related to this celebration.
Siam City Hotel is hosting the "Siam Days of Glory" exhibition featuring a collection of photographs from the book Siam Days of Glory: 19th Century Photographs of Thailand by Athada Khoman, in the hotel's lobby from Oct 16-31.
I wonder if this book is published in Thai, English, both separately, or both within the same book. I downloaded and magnified the open book in the photo but the print became so blurry that I couldn't tell what language(s) were on the page.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

In this link it looks to me as if English at the top of the page, followed by Thai. There's reference to a phone/email if you want to ask them. Pete

found the book on Asia books web site and it says it is published in English. I also zoomed in on the writing and there are gaps between words which to me means english and not thai. The price with Asia books is 1848 baht but the full price is 2310 baht

published in English
If true that's too bad. Imo it should be bilingual to be marketed successfully. I know my wife and family are very keen to obtain books like this about Thai history but if the text is not in Thai (or duplicated in Thai) I'm not sure it would appeal to them.
