Tequilas

Post by hhfarang »

What discussion of spirits would be complete without mentioning the now booming and growing sub group of Tequila. My friends and I used to do whole evenings of shooters of the stuff in our younger days with just a lick of salt and a bite of lime wedge chased by a good Mexican beer like Dos Equis, but now more than one or two of those hurts me very much.

I've always thought that Tequila and its cousin Mezcal has a narcotic in it along with the alcohol as it has always given me a different, totally uninhibited, high than normal spirits, wine, or beer. Over the course of an evening once in my late 20s a friend and I finished a bottle of Mezcal and I ate the worm at the bottom. I lost the rest of that evening and the entire next day!

Jose' Quervo will do in margaritas, but for shooters I like something a little smoother.

Anyway, here are a couple of my favorites when I do get brave and choose to imbibe...

I remember the days when tequila was cheap but it caught on to the "aged" and "reserve" and "special" craze of drinks and there are many very expensive ones on the market now. I don't drink tequila often, that bottle of "Don Alejo Reposado" I bought a few years ago is still half full in my closet, but the best tequila I ever had was a home made one in Tijuana! (Thank you Juanita!)

Patron Tequila, my favorite, hard to find here, I only know of one bar that has it.

^ Terrace90 Mexican/American restaurant has it last time I looked (along with the biggest selection of other tequilas I've seen anywhere here).

Complete loopy juice for me. The Long Haired General banned me from drinking it quite some time ago. Apparently taking the dog for a walk stark b*ll*ck naked is not the done thing in these parts

For me, good tequila is a great drink, to be had/loved in the right place/time.

Problem is, getting good tequila, very few bars have anything that even comes close to it.

Plus the bar girls seems to like this petrol version that they pass off as tequila.

Decent Mexican tequila does the trick but it is few and far between the places you can get it from.

Normally now, I just excuse myself because it's just cheap petrol.

Looney Tunes, not Merry Melodies with this in most places.

Ok so im plugging my restaurant. I just opened up a new Mexican Restaurant in the Night Market. Its Called Margaritas and we sell Margaritas Pizzas,,,,HAHA Just Kidding, NO PIZZAS (People have asked). Its named after the drink "MARGARITA" and thats what we serve, Great margaritas. I love Tequila, Its my favorite drink. I Find it hard to find good tequila in this part of the world. Further more, I really want to have a stock of good tequilas in my Restaurant, being a Mexican restaurant and all. I want to congratulate the first guy in this post for his great taste in tequila. "Conmemorativo" is an excellent tequila.
Anyways, I am having trouble hunting down good tequilas. I know where to find , in BKK, Patron, Don Julio, and Hornito, but would like to avoid the trip every time i need to restock. Does anybody know where I can find this tequilas in Hua Hin?
By the way, I use Sauza tequilla in my Margaritas,, and we use our own home made sweet and sour mix. At the moment I only have Sauza white and Sauza gold, which are more than decent tequilas and better than anything that comes with a little red hat.

I must admit that from my experience of drinking Tequila, either I've never tried a decent one or it all tastes like petrol as I find it hard to drink without revulsion.
If I come across any of that 'Patron' or those others recommended above, I'll give it a try as I'm curious to know if any Tequila is a pleasure to drink.

Its twin brother is Chinese mao tai. Both taste very similar to me and if you do shots for hours in the Chinese fashion during a meal, we'll see you in 2 days. :D Pete

The common ''downing in one spirit'' to be found in China is Baijiu - of which family, Maotai is an infamous member..... in general, fermented from grain, tastes like cr@p and can be +55% by volume alcohol. I have on numerous occasions had to accept the challenge from Chinese co-workers, clients and associates alike, where we ''Gan Bei'' - literally ''dry the cup''. Unfortunately, the Chinese will take it in turns to Gan Bei the Laowai (foreigner), meaning I actually drink a damn sight more than my dear Chinese cousins, dependent on the size of the bl**dy table. As a norm, this would mean me drinking 6-8 vs their 1.

I have tried to use this excuse with the Long Haired General on a number of occasions when returning home 7 sheets to the wind........ thankfully us Welshman have perfected the art of re-growing testicles. :D

Actually I just popped into one of my local bars here on the way home from work and I noticed that they do have that Sauza Gold mentioned above.
I didn't try it as I generally just have a couple of small beers during the week when I'm working, but is that a Tequilla outside of the petrol department?
If so, I'll give it a try at the weekend.

Sauza Gold is not considered a high-end tequila, it's just like Jose Cuervo.

Something happened to one of the images in my first post, it was Patron, by the way.
Does anybody know where I can find this tequilas in Hua Hin?
Albertodelgado, Villa Market has the best selection I've seen here.

Steve, Sauza is a big Tequila company that produces all levels of the spirit, from the stuff you would rather put into your motorbike tank to a few real premium brands. Sauza Gold, as TT said is just like Quervo, fine for mixed drinks, but for shooters you want to go upmarket a bit. The one I posted in the op is one of those; Sauza Commemorativo is imo one of the smoothest and best. It was recommended to me during a discussion of Tequilas with some actual Mexican nationals living in California a few years ago and for shooters, I've only used that or Patron since, but I've never seen the Commemorativo in Thailand.
