Whats HH like in the "Wet Season"

Post by Cowtown Comedy »

I was curious what the HH area was like in the wet season. I'm assuming the wet season occurs may-sep. Is there many tourists wandering around HH this time of year? Do any of the businesses close down?

Curious..

The Monsoon (and we only get one this far north) in HH hits at about the end of September and leaves by Loi Kratong. (mid November), or that is how it is supposed to be.

The last three years have been very unpredictable. We have had rain most months last year and one rainfall already this year.

It still applies though that most of the rain comes during the monsoon season and we do not get anything like the amount of rain that they get in the south.

This last Monsoon was quite bad. Last year there was hardly any rain at all, leaving the province getting close to drought.

The year before Prachauab and Phetburi experienced the heaviest rainfall for 25 (some reports say 40) years.

I would not expect to see any heavy rain here now until well into May. After that who knows.

thanks for the info Guess. I'm still curious what the level of tourism is like. Are the bars still full and bouncing, or is everything dead that time of year? Do some of the some shops /bars close down?

I'd go along with what Guess said about the rain etc. Aug/Sept always seem the most oppressive months to me. Hot and very humid. It's even more of an effort to get anything done.
Years ago, there were quite a few bars and restaurants that would close during this time. Owners would go back to Europe, Scandanavia, N America or wherever to escape the conditions here and enjoy what summer their home countries had to offer. It's also a favourite time for renovations.
These days I don't think so many shut up shop, not least because competition is fiercer in town now and owners feel they have to try and make some money during the quieter times. Nevertheless, Aug/Sept can be reasonably busy tourist wise. There's still plenty of folk who take holidays in the "traditional" months. Many have kids - so school holidays. It's nowhere near as busy as now though.
The renovations/building work also seem to be a year round thing now as well.

When I was there last August, everything seemed open, it was quieter though. Quite nice really, but as above, I did feel it oppressive and had 3/4 days of rain - obviously expected!!! I recall it being 41c and muggy on one day, others were similar and others sunny. A mixed bag.

knee deep in water

Post by essbee »

Well March is not usually the rainy season but during my last visit in March near the Police station in town I was up to my knees in water. For 2 hours it just pelted down. Traffic was a nightmare and the whole situation became somewhat comical. 3 hours later all the water had gone.
