Rums

Post by hhfarang »

Another spirit that is made in many countries, but one that I don't use very often. Made mostly from sugar cane or sugar beets and in tropical places like most of the Caribbean Islands, I've had a few rum punches on holidays there, but mostly I don't drink it.

It does seem to be popular though and I keep four varieties in my bar for guests or parties, Havana Club light rum, Captain Morgan dark spiced rum, Malibu (mainly for the Thai ladies) and of course the local Sangsom.

Any favorite rum drinks or recipes?

Mods: Maybe a new master topic like "Time for a Drink" would be in order to move these booze threads (Beers, Whiskeys, Clear Spirits, and Rums to as I think it would have a life of it's own. Others threads that I could see being very popular in that area would be Tequilas, Liqueurs, Cognacs and Brandys, and Wines (which would be an extremely popular and helpful one here with all the different varieties from hundreds of countries)). People could add their favorite personal drink recipes to each of these threads which would be nice too! :thumb:

Interestingly, the strongest rum is made in Austria and not the Caribbean, it's called "Stroh" and 160 proof! My favorite drink is Mai Tai, but of course not the kind you get at bars and restaurants. I make a liter at a time and serve it over crushed ice.

Rabi Tai

4 oz Orgeat (Almond-flavored syrup, easy to make it at home)
4 oz Orange Curacao (You can substitute Triple Sec)
4 oz Strawberry-flavored rum
4 oz Banana-flavored rum
4 oz Dark rum
4 oz Gin
8 oz Spiced rum
8 oz Gold rum
Juice of four limes
1 oz Honey

Mix everything together in a bottle, shake it well, and serve it over crushed ice. It's pretty potent, so you might want to drink it close to the bed!

Bundy is divine stuff, if anyone knows where you can get it in HH I'd be most grateful!

You can get it in Pattaya Buksi, if anybody is going that way. Villa have a lot of Australian products, maybe worth checking.

Sangsom is my favorite - straight up - no ice - no soda. The upcountry locals still can´t believe it and keep on trying to fuck-up my drink with either.

Mixed in a cocktail I prefer to use it for Mojito or Caipirinha. Blends in very well, available in any local store and gets the local ladies wild.

Well, have both light and dark rum, surprised no-one mentioned Bacardi yet for the girls.

Yeah, Capt. Morgans and Lambs Navy Rum are generally popular and the benchmark in many a place but there are much more specialized and higher quality one to be found.

Not a big rum fan myself but it's a great ingredient in any cocktail, for sure.

However, neat, then we are probably wandering into Jack Sparrow territory.

I was introduced to Pusser's Rum a year or so ago - great drink, unfortunately hard to get my hands on.

Bundy Rum O.P. - Dark & Stormy (Rum & Ginger Beer)...... great long drink.

Tried Sroh Rum in South Africa on a business trip last year - they actually had it in a ''liqueur'' coffee... fairly powerful stuff mind you even if we were on the ''lower'' alcohol content!!

When working in India, Old Monk and coke was the tipple of choice. Where we were based, this was about the only decent spirit available. Actually not all that bad.

Here in China I don't generally touch the stuff, although Capt. Morgan's and Bacardi are readily available....... One of the expats here does bring in the odd bottle of Wood's 100 though which I do sample from time to time (out of sight of she who must be obeyed of course).

Some great rums from the Carribean. Barbadoes (Mountgay) Jamaica (Appletons) and the Virgin Isles are my favorites,
Rum punch-- something strong (Rum) something weak (ice) something sour (Lime or lemon) something sweet (sugar)
