In my opinion, Sauza gold is not like Jose Cuervo,,, Although it is not a Top Shelf Tequila, it still has a good taste and goes down pretty smooth. Its pretty much a middle of the road tequila. Like saying Johnny Walker Black. Its a good whiskey but there are better. Jose Cuervo,, well its just as good as any of them tequilas with the little red plastic sombrero.

Don't you think Johnny Walker Black is a top-shelf Scotch?! It's pretty much the top of the line (with Chivas Regal) of the blended Scotch whiskies, except the double-matured and aged ones! (Please note that Single Malts are in a different category.) I'm not that much of an expert on tequilas, but Sauza Gold is on the same price level with Jose Cuervo in the USA.

Is there any Tequila that you can actually sip or do you have to grit your teeth and throw down all of it, even the decent stuff?
I wouldn't do shots of Black Label as I quite like the taste and prefer to drink it slowly.

Get a bottle of "Don Julio Reposado" (BKK Siam Paragon down stairs) , Put in Freezer over night. Squeeze a shot-glass full of natural lime juice, and server yourself another shot-glass full of cold tequila.
step 1 Sip the tequila
Step 2 Sip the Lime
Step 3 Repeat step 1 and 2 until reaching desired levels of intoxication.

Recommended use: Sit in comfortable surroundings with one or 2 other buddies, and talk about all the things people say you shouldn't, like politics, religion, ex-wifes, and stuff like that.

Warning: there is a chance you might find yourself in a fist fight.

That sounds more like it! I don't really like doing shots as I prefer to drink slowly over a long evening rather than get drunk in twenty minutes flat.

When my liver was a lot younger, my friends and I used to do exactly that, but without the glasses. We'd just sit a bottle of decent tequila in the middle of the table with a bowl of lime wedges and pass the bottle (until we passed out, sometimes).

Oops! I was wrong!   I went to the liquor shop today, Sauza Gold is $10/bottle and Jose Cuervo is $15/bottle!   (As I said, I'm not an expert on tequilas, but I doubt a much better product would be 33% less than the not so good product. Sorry my Mexican friend, time to take the "Tequila 101" class!)

TT, just buy a bottle of each and do a blind taste test and let us know the result. :D

I think Cuervo may be more expensive, not because it is better than Sauza, but because in the U.S. it is the best known brand of Tequila (a couple of songs have been written about it for God's sake!). It's name recognition as they have a much better marketing program. I think Sauza (at all levels) is more popular in Mexico but most gringos don't know much about it. Like I said in an earlier post, I had never tried Sauza until a Mexican national recommended it to me and I was in my late 40's and had been drinking tequila for 30 years!

Anyway, nowadays, I pronounce Tequila "to-kill-ya", cause that's what it does to me!

I agree 100%
I mean why is absolute vodka so expensive, its such a horrible vodka. How many time have you seen it prices over say Stolichnaya a much better vodka, hell I've seen Wyborowa as cheep as $3 a bottle and its usually ranked i the top 10.
Its all about advertising.

I actually had them both, but such a long time ago that I don't remember which one I liked more. Lets just leave this to be decided by others! My Don Alejo Reposado has been in my freezer for years and it's still 3/4 full. I don't drink much tequila nowadays!
