Bond for Australians

An Australian guy, his wife is a friend of my partner, tells me that Aussies married to Thai's are not required to put up the 800,000 baht bond for a retirement visa, this was told to me as i was leaving his place so i didn't have a chance to ask many questions though he assured me he was right, and i would believe him as he has been married to his wife for 20 years and living in both countries,
if any Australians out there or someone in the know can enlighten me please do.

Things change rapidly though and many times it's not published straight away. There was a very long period of time, maybe a decade, where New Zealand passport holders were getting a 90 day visa waiver stamp upon entry. I believe the reason was because they reciprocated with same for Thai passport holders entering NZ. Since been canceled per my knowledge, I think because NZ found themselves with too many overstay Thais working etc. Thailand in turn reciprocated I guess.

Australia is a key destination for Thai students and I assume well off Thai retirees as well, and certainly rapidly growing trade. Perhaps a deal is in the works or already done low key? The problem is if it is very new, walking into any immigration office and asking, even Bangkok, may draw a blank unless you happen to speak to the head honcho. Pete

I would have 'guessed' the exact opposite ie it was a very old ruling under which bladerunner2120's wife's friend may have been grandfathered. But as I said, that is no more than a guess.

In my experience, there are plenty of smart Alecs out there who like you to believe they know everything. However, if you have time to drill down a little, they actually know very little. It's a shame bladerunner2120 didn't have more time to drill down, and extract the exact circumstances.

The rules and conditions at the bottom seem to be the same as any other country as far as I can see.

Maybe he's talking about a marriage visa instead of retirement. That's less, 400,000 baht?

Splitlid is correct and bladerunner - lesson 1. Don't believe anything Thais tell you unless you can verify it (not with another Thai) ha, ha!

I dont belive anything until im actually doing it and im very aware they(Thais) move the goal posts during the game.
That guy is Australian and lives around half the year in Thailand and the other half here, his wife is thai and there been married around 20 ys, he is retired now and would have been for 5 to 10 ys, when he told me i automatically thought he probably qualified because of his income, he had a very good job so i would guess his super would be quite a nice size and his wife runs a couple of businesses here that do ok.
Anyway he is back but im about to leave so so its going to be a month before i can talk to him again, but i will.
Meanwhile i will check in Bkk when im there and let you guys know what this aussie guy says when i do speak with him again.
And the comment earlier about our strong dollar! that we should have to pay 1.5m.....the reason we have a strong dollar is that the Chinese want our iron ore coal and gas, were living in a fools paradise down here, this cant be sustained for ever and one day in the not to distant future there not going to need so much of it and then what? Current government has little vision.
The other reason of the strong AU$ is our banks have been regulated....sure a few hick ups here and there over the years but financially strong and low risk taking there been reaming our arses for years returning massive dividends to shareholders, government even guaranteed our money if you had it in an Australian bank during the GFC, and that my friend is what we all need...that governments regulate the financial players of the world

If you had the answer to what is the life span of your various mines, based upon current volumes - because I think demand from China will be continue a long time - this would probably be a good indication of how the currency will perform
