A Green Sea

Post by lomuamart »

I walked the beach to Khao Takiab on Saturday morning. From just south of Chiva Som to Monkey Mountain, the sea was lapping up on the beach, green in colour. I'm not joking. There wee even jet skis a bit further out and the plume of spray they were throwing up also looked green. I've never seen anything like it. BTW, it was about 11am and cloudy. The green wasn't an aquamariny sort of colour - more pea green.
Did the same walk yesterday morning and the sea, at the same time with partial sunlight, was back to normal.
Can anyone explain how this effect happened? Algae? It was weird to say the least and before anyone asks, I hadn't been drinking or anything else. Other beach strollers were looking at it as well. No-one was in the water.

Hi Lomu,
We were staying down on the beach and were told by the beach security people that it was algae and they were warning guests against going swimming.

Thanks barrys.
That explains it then. There weren't any security guards around where I was to advise against swimming, but I wasn't going to go in anyway.
It was short lived, as I said. Gone within 24 hours.

I remember something similar a few years ago - its algal bloom and usually coincides with El Niño years (which this one is).

Hi simflier

If I've understood your somewhat cryptic comment correctly, here's the explanation.

We were staying at a hotel on the beach and it was the hotel's own security and safety staff that warned against going into the sea.

I have never seen the Green sea but one thing I noticed when I go into the sea at Hua Hin, when you come out your trunks stink.
I noticed this last February and again in early December, I am not sure if it is the general sewerage that is deposited into the sea and the tide brings it in.

My trunks are normally on until 6pm ish, so when I come off the beach my trunks Pen and Ink a bit, any BMs had a similar problem.
Maybe the sea the far side of monkey mountain is cleaner.

That could definitely be your problem! I suggest you don't do that in your trunks. :D :D :D

Yes, I think this is some sort of a polution in sea, because my friends told the same.Maybe El Ninjo, but still it stinks, but only some days, other days no problem at all. I don,t know the reason, maybe the wind direction has an effect

Street sewers where everything is pours into except human waste is pipped out into the gulf. Enjoy your swimming but keep your mouths closed
