Entrapment?

Post by HHADFan »

Sarge and I were out on a bicycle ride yesterday and turned off Phetkasem to the road that goes to Palm Hills. It felt so cool in the shade that we decided to stop and rest our aging, aching hindquarters for a minute.

As soon as we got off the bikes a young Thai man on a motorbike came up from behind and stopped in front of us. I figured he thought one of us had a flat and he might may a few baht helping us get to a bike shop.

"Do you want cannabis?", he asked. I was surprised and thought I had misheard him, but he repeated it. "Do you want cannabis?"

"No, we just want to rest a minute and ride our bikes."

He was quite insistent and it took a couple minutes to convince him that we did _not_ want cannabis. He finally left and we went on with our ride. Sarge and I were a bit mystified as we hardly look like dope smokin' hippies. :rasta:

At Borfai I turned back on to Phetkasem and as I was waiting to make the U turn I heard a motorbike beep several times. I looked over my shoulder and saw the 'salesman' with another Thai man on the back of his bike smiling and waving. I shrugged and rode home.

At home I called the missus and told her about it. Her immediate reply was that he was with the police. The entire situation was odd enough that her take on it is quite believable. I've been here about three and a half years and have spent more than a little time in both Farang and Thai bars and such, and have never been offered drugs.

The drug laws here are pretty harsh so please be wise and say 'no' if offered any kind of illegal drugs.

Same thing happens in Bali, your are offered dope, you buy and then seller disappears. 5/10 mins later you are picked up the police and charged with possesion and lock up for a few years.

About 6 years ago in Hua Hin I went to the Thai Boxing on my own. Sat down and was having a drink and got chatting to a guy who said that he ran the place. He asked if I was having a good time and did I like to bet.

He suggested that we bet on the winner of each bout that night. I thought about it and then suddenly remembered (A) gambling is illegal in Thailand and could easily be dobbed in to the MIB and (B) the location of the boxing place was down a dingy side alley and if I did manage to win his money (he suggested 250baht per bout) what was the chance of me getting jumped walking up the alley and being relieved of my winnings plus anymore money I had.

Told him politely no, and just carried on chatting and drinking with him. At the end of the night said see yah and went on my way with no problem.

Just a warning that it is not only drugs that you want to be careful about as I have read you get in big problems with the MIB if you are caught gambling.

First one sounds a clear case of potential entrapment. They do it on Koh Phangan and sting you for a fair few quid over what the normal fine would be if you went to court.

As for the gambling I always have a flutter at boxing matches including with the police and have walked away with my winnings no problem. We have a cockfighting ring down the road and some serious money changes hands without any attention from the police.

These are age old tricks which keep trapping the naive or unaware. Asia has very severe laws on somethings and Thailand's drug laws are a good example.

Always remember seeing the sign at the Thai side of the border with Laos at the Friendship Bridge which says....

"Trafficking and possession of illegal drugs can lead to the following consequences: Arrest, Imprisonment, Confiscation of Property and Execution."

Fairly final, not left much out then.

Can't trust anyone, least of all some bedraggled Thai guy that just starts talking to you.
