Penang or Langkawi

Post by chelsea »

I am looking at spending 10 days in Malaysia at the end of May/early June with my GF.

Have stayed in Penang/Batu Ferringhi a few years ago, but have been reading that the beach at Batu Ferringhi is worse than Patong with the Jet Ski's/Para Sailing/Vendors etc, so not sure whether I want to have all that going on.

Have no problem with staying a few days in Georgetown before heading for the beach. I have read some good reports about Penang and am keen to have another look around there.

My question here is, are there any other beach areas other than Batu Ferringhi around Penang that have plenty of beachside bars/cafes and also places nearby to eat out at night at (other then the large hotels), but do not all the daytime hassles of the ongoing beach activities.

Have been looking at Langkawi, but cant find anyone who has been there to see what it is all about. So any ideas on areas to stay with good beaches and plenty to do would be a great help.

As mentioned, I will be with my GF who is not really into shopping malls, but more interested in how good the food & wine is and that there is ample amount of nightlife to wander around and enjoy.

Have looked at the weather at the time we are going and seems to be much the same sort of rainfall that happen in Phuket at the same time of year.

Any help or advice that any of you can give would be much appreciated.

Langkawi far superior beaches (than Penang) however night life is a wash out - far stricter and your GF might get a few scowly looks!
Food and restaurants - Penang hands down!!!! PS easy ferry rideif not long to Langkai from Penang and I believe Penang has a nightly gambling cruise which might interest you (near Fort Cornwallis). Plenty of travel agent types there too.
Thailand beaches by far and large better than what the west coast of Malaysia has to offer IMO.
Have a squizz at Pangkor Island!

I have been to both a few years ago. Langkawi wins hands down on the beaches but don't expect to find nightlife and good restaurants there, it's all about nature on Langkawi. The ferry we took was a pretty rough ride, so we decided to fly back to KL instead.
