A Cool Sport

Post by E-Dork »

I have only just realised (yes, I'm old) that in Ice Hockey there are actual boxing matches thrown in too which is watched by the referees until someone goes down.

I now need to see if the game itself is very good by giving it a proper watch and learning the rules, if so, it may be the first American/Canadian? sport I take to watching. I like the fact that there are few goals in the game... not like 112-119 or 79-3 which is just crap and I think the game continues just like a game should unlike American Football where it's, stop start, stop start.... ooh stop start again - and also played by a bunch of pussy's in tights....(see below)

So, can anyone give me a little insight into the world of Ice Hockey. Who's the top teams. What leagues, cups, etc there are. Star players....
If it's within arms reach, there's nothing to worry about!!

The top leagues are North-American NHL (National Hockey League) with both American and Canadian teams and lots of players from Europe as well. The top teams vary from season to season but I think Detroit Red Wings have been quite succesful recently along with Chigago Black Hawks.

The top European league is the Russian KHL (Kontinental Hockey League) which also draws European players because they pay good salaries. They also have teams from Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakstan and Latvia and have plans to expand it westwards. Don't really know any of the teams that well there.

Both have their own web pages.

For most of us Europeans the high light of the year is the World Cup, which are usually played in May. The top teams there are Russia, Czech, Sweden and Canada.

Saw my first game many moons ago in Toronto in the freezing cold of February.

Saw the maestro Wayne Gretzki

Great spectacle. Things that really hit me were:

1) The physical violence was more important than the flow of play
2) Game breaks were geared to TV commercial times
3) Everybody, but everybody sits watching gorging themselves on burgers, cokes and beers
4) The so called car park was covered in 1 foot of ice

Also saw ice hockey being played in the streets, squares and park lakes by kids and pensioners too. Everywhere was covered in ice
