Thai police probe death of Lincolnshire couple
Thai police are investigating the deaths of a retired British couple who were on holiday in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai.
George and Eileen Everitt, from Boston, Lincolnshire, died on 19 February, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said.
It is not known how they died; police said there was no sign of violence.
A spokesperson from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We are in touch with the family and are helping them through this very difficult time".
Thai police told the BBC that the couple were found dead in their room at the DownTown Inn, where they had checked in on 9 February.
Mrs Everitt, 74, was found lying on the bed, while Mr Everitt, 78, was in a sitting position on the floor, with his face falling forward on to the bed.
Police said no drugs, medicine or poison were found in the room.
Nor was there any evidence of violence or fighting in the room or any wound on their bodies.
The bodies are being kept at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The police have reached no conclusion yet on why or how the couple died.

Comment - Sad story, seems to be one of these odd death senarios we have seen in a few places in the same style. Remember that death of two young tourists on a holiday location in the same vein as this? Phi Phi/Krabi or somewhere? Not sure, can't remember. Maybe some kind of gas etc.

somebodys getting a massive bill!
Re: Lincolnshire couple die mysteriously in Chiang Mai
Perhaps not so mysterious. I've read of cases of long term married couples where one passes away unexpectedly and the other simply has no will to live any longer, and/or the sudden shock does in the remaining partner. The husband sitting on the floor by the bed could well be he simply collapsed upon finding her dead. Pete

The case of the two tourists (children) who died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning a couple of years ago was in Corfu. A tragic case. This was the first thing I thought of here - or possibly a suicide pact. At this point I am reminded of how distasteful speculating on these things is.Spitfire wrote:Comment - Sad story, seems to be one of these odd death senarios we have seen in a few places in the same style. Re: Lincolnshire couple die mysteriously in Chiang Mai
Jamie, you are right with that, but two tourists died mysteriously on Phi Phi island in a hotel almost 2 years ago that gained some international cover, think it was called Laleena guesthouse on Phi Phi, an American and a Norwegian, and oddly due to cyanide poisoning.
I think this link is Ok to this forum as I don't think it's considered "competing" as don't think it has a Hua Hin section.

My first thought was the same as Petes' - maybe the lady had died and her husband collapsed on finding her.
A very sad case anyway and let's hope the medical folks in ChiangMai (who are I think very good) will be able to establish the cause, because the couples friends and family will need to know.

Happened years ago in my family. Long time married Uncle and Aunt and dependent on each other. Auntie died in her armchair by the fireside and uncle collapsed and died when returning from work and discovering her dead.

That's sad Richard - those incidents (not uncommon) do make me wonder just a bit whether the surviving partner is being 'taken over'. Sounds a bit whacky I know and maybe just one way of trying to explain the phenomenon.
Anyway there doesn't seem to be any more news yet on the ChiangMai couple so lets hope their case is being very thoroughly invstigated.

Well according to Mr, Drummond, this hotel is the same one as where the NZ girls were staying, one of whom died after initially believed to have eaten some dubious seaweed, which has apparantly since been discounted - the cases seem different, maybe just coincidence, or maybe there is a link there?

Found a link on the Phi Phi Laleena Guest House tragedy. Whether or not there are any similarities, makes you wonder:

It certainly does make you wonder Roel - but that report on the PhiPhi guesthouse deaths has too many loopholes for my liking.Roel wrote:Found a link on the Phi Phi Laleena Guest House tragedy. Whether or not there are any similarities, makes you wonder:

First the author seems to have a real grudge against the guesthouse owner (quite likely justified - but hardly conducive to a reasoned argument.)
Second the room cited in the 'US Embassy' officials tests is Room 6 - the girls died in rooms 4 and 5. Again - not conclusive because gassing incidents don't confine themselves to one small area. Nevertheless a bit strange that at the time of the alleged tests all other rooms show N/D - presumably 'None Detected'?
And lastly the report itself has too many 'illegibles' on it against what are pretty important details.
I'm not making a case in support of the owner at all. Just wondering how alleged gases, presumably from a water treatment plant 2 doors away, would find their way lethally into 2 rooms one week and then only into one different room a month later? It does sound like a personal vendetta.
That's not to say of course that a similar thing hasn't happened in ChiangMai i.e. noxious fumes from somewhere. But most gases and chemicals have a noticeable smell.
And still no news 8 days on which seems strange. ChiangMai is home to one of the major teaching hospitals. How long do toxicology reports take for heavens sake? As well as prolonging the agony for this poor couples family Thailand could yet again to be heading for some criticism.

This doesn't clear up much concerning this case, or the people who died from alleged bad seaweed/food poisoning. At least the problems are still in the News and being investigated. Pete

To be honest, anywhere else in the world and that hotel would be shut pending a full and proper enquiry. According to the BP report, everything is a coincidence, which is tosh. And surprisingly bookings for the hotel are down, which appears the only concern.
I truly believe there will be a time soon, when the whole Country is treated as a health risk!
Thailand is sleep walking, albeit slowly, to a tourist black hole. A colleague of mine just came back, he's been sick for a week and a half with a stomach virus.

You're right Caller, the more things change, in terms of development, the more things stay the same, in terms of lack of adequate regulation. Focus on food safety is primarily left to the vendors. Focus on public transportation safety is primarily left to the vehicle owners. Focus on corruption is primarily left to the most corrupt. Does become discouraging if you think about it too much. Are these idiots for real? Or is it just bad reporting?
quote: "The deputy chief said all three of the guests who died at the hotel had locked their rooms from the inside."
Should be obvious: if you don`t want to risk dying in your room, don`t lock the door.
