I'll assume you want to use this in your car rather than find your way around town on foot. You can get the cheap GPS clones for around 2,000 baht or so, they're quite decent sized units. The battery life is abysmal but then again this would be true of most car-mounted GPS units anyway. A cigarette-lighter plug comes as standard with the unit. Note that these 'clones' are typically pda style units running windows ce.
They mostly use the igo8 preloaded mapsets for Thailand and can be programmed for Thai or English. I have used Garmin maps as well, and while I have found them slightly more detailed, I find the igo8 mapsets give a much better route plan. This is my preferred platform when I'm driving.
The Garmin maps also can look cluttered if you want more details and Thailand maps v.10 is very slow.
If you want to find your way around on foot get a gps-enabled phone and get it programmed with a Thai mapset. My late model Nokia n-series gets free maps for the life of the phone and I also have Garmin maps loaded on it. They both have their pros and cons.
Important note: Before any trip, always plan the route. I use www.mapguidethailand.com to find the place and get the gps co-ordinates. Program the destination in the gps unit before leaving and you can't go far wrong. Don't do it on the fly. Most gps units have a decent search function, so if you're staying at a reasonable hotel at your destination it will probably be in the database already.
