Home Security Resourses & Solutions......

Post by Aussie_Al »

In response and referance to the couple of threads recently about home invasions, thefts, ransacking etc. And without any personal interest in anything I may mention here.

Using google.com.au, but sure with any other search engine anyone could get more than enough answers. I simply searched "home security software", and came up with heaps of web sites offering products. None of which I can or would suggest as better than any others. As it is up to everyone to do their own research; as all needs, and budgets, are different.

However, as nearly all of us have computors, and broadband connection which can be online nearly all the time. The products offered turns every linked computor/laptop, and web cam, into a home security solution. At least for recording what is occuring, and as a surveillance system.
In addition now very cheap wireless cameras can be added and linked. Many can be set up so if the camera detects motion, it starts recording; also some can be set up to automatically call a phone number etc.

In addition provided the system is sphisticated enough, one can select zones to be active at various times. So even when home moving around, the perimeter can be actively "alarmed".

Now while my suggestions here may be of little solace to those who have been victims recently, and to them I extend my deepest sympathies.
Possibly others may find some degree of peace of mind from my suggestions, if they were unaware of what is available.

Cheers Allan

We have all of the above, plus yard lighting that stays on all night and two soi dogs. We've never had a problem yet (knock wood), but a comment about a couple of the options. A camera turns out better for me to make sure the yard is being maintained and dogs fed when we are gone. Other than that I don't see much use for one here as I doubt the police would act upon a video of a burglar (like SJs underwear burglar :D ), so unless you happen to recognize the person yourself it is of little use IMO. We also have the perimeter alarm system with beams around the property. This too, unless you make hundreds of crisscrossing beams (ala, Mission Impossible) is fairly useless (again, just my opinion) and more expense and hassle than it is worth (ours was very expensive) as any burglar worth his salt can go over or under it and it will give many false alarms because of animals or shrubbery blowing in the sometimes strong winds here (unless you keep all plantings well away from the beam paths).
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Firstly appologies to the Mods. who moved this from the Beach Bar where the other threads were posted.

Next to hhfarang, your comments no doubt true and valued.

I was merely trying to offer examples of what is available. Particularly with a system that can call a phone with a message should somethinbg occur or a panic button be pressed. As these may enable some to have a greater degree of confidence; if they know friends close have been called, and will arrive soon, in the event of an incident

I did the same research and there is just too much on offer at various prices and standards.

In the end I went with a standalone IR system from SJ that will call your mobile if you have a landline installed

The problem is the more sophisticated you get you spend more time/money on preventing some one getting around the sensors and chasing your own tail plus increasing the requirement for UPS etc for power.

Start simple add a few dummy devices and some lights with sensors IMO unless you are very isolated

Is there really any point in installing CCTV since the cops do nothing even if they have video of the perps in your house?

I'm pretty sure we've had a recent thread on this topic and a big dog came out on top for home security!

Have to say that I think CCTV for private houses is worthless in Thailand, motion sensor security lights are a better bet but they're not very reliable. Big flashing siren with battery back up inside would be my biggest recommendation.

I have cctv and if anyone activates it via motion sensor it activates a loud audio alarm around the property that says something like the 'armed police are on there way' in thai, scares the shit out of me!

Only been activated once when a 3 foot fat lizard somehow crept under the gate. The police found it very funny though. Cost us 150 baht for the call out, they killed the lizard and carted it away, maybe for somtam.

At 3-feet long, it must have been quite a young monitor lizard .....so why did they kill it, thereby breaking the law :? - these animals are protected under international agreements!!

Baffling to me why anyone would kill such a creature.
