Yeah, it's no going to happen swiftly, it would take a major effort and countless billions of baht to do it. The existing train tracks/system was put down so long ago when it was still possible to complete such grand projects.

Now, it's all simply too corrupt with so many with their 'hands in the cookies jar' that know they can feed of it, you'd have to bribe every little 'tin pot hat' governor and his hangers-on as it would go through their turf.

That's why there is no new train tracks anywhere and....well....we've talked about the problems within the SRT as an archaic dinosaur of a government department. Also applies to roads, don't see many completely new ones, just widening and repairing of existing ones in general. Of course, there are some exceptions but probably fewer than you'd imaging.

Everything costs 50-70% more than it should do, including roads/resurfacing/loans/trains and almost anything you can think of.

They should have a degree in embezzlement available here at colleges and universities.

Absolutely. But while a ride on a train is lovely, the novelty wears off after a couple of hours, those seats just aren't comfortable enough for 5-6 hours at a time. It's a nice and cheap way to get to Cha-Am, and if I'm going down south I'll always prefer a sleeper train to a bus but as a method of getting to and from bangkok, I think I've seen my last ride on the SRT.
