It's quite difficult to explain about "Why beef and not pork?"
In Hindu religion : Cow is a carrier of Siva ( one of three gods in Hindu).
In buddhist (Theravada) thai style, It's depend on their believes , mixed up to culture and influenced by Mahayana and Hindu ?
It is big animal ( it meant it has more good karma than other small animals(short life cycle) and also work as in the farm, rice field - Rice is the main dish.
We drink milk to survive when we were young.
Somebody used to see " the method to slaugter it" and could see it's very stress and crying.
Do you know about Kyun-yin ? a goddess of Mercy( Mahayana Buddhism), she didn't eat beef because her dad (who was a bad king) reborn to be cow for 500 yrs.

Why beef and not pork ? in Real Buddism. It's sin to kill animals ( If you kill by yourself, order someone to do that, or pleasure when someone kill for you)
also I'm not in 95 % who went to the temple to pray for won a lotto. It's midlead by culture and their believes! It's not taught in Buddhism :)

Welcome.. For a first post, Julie, you are doing rather well. Most of what you say, I have seen expressed elsewhere and has a lot of validity.

My wife has never eaten beef and when I asked her why she said "It is too big a soul to kill". :?

I'm not sure if that was just her own personal opinion or a Buddhist teaching.

This has nothing to do with religion

The owner was told by a 'Fortune Teller' that it would be bad luck to sell beef in the restaurant. The cooks believed this too and now refuse to handle beef

My understanding from my Thai friends is that beef and buffalo are work animals and therefore it would be the equivalent of eating your tractor

Certainly in India the idea of killing a beast of burden/work animal is the reason Hindus don't eat beef and cows are sacred animals wandering around the city streets.

Another mind boggling tradition when it appears to be ok to kill your wife or give her face an acid bath as a divorce procedure when you decide you don't like her anymore. Bloody waste of space on an already over crowded planet. Pete

There are certain places where they won't serve beef as their employees refuse to handle the goods
