Having been away for a week, I returned to find 2 lovely kittens living in a large pot in the garden. I hadn't noticed them before as the pot was partially hidden behind trees, these trees have been recently removed by the gardeners. Their ages approx 8 weeks+ they were being fed by mother cat who is an excellent mother, very strict. It looks like they were not allowed to leave the pot.
Last night there was a hell of a commotion, dogs barking, squealing etc. I thought it was just the Soi dogs having a dispute in the street. This morning I found to my horror, one kitten gone the other with a huge bloody gash on the neck. The mother is crying and looking for the missing kitten. I do not know really what to do, look at the kitten or leave it to the mother. I am afraid that if I interfere with nature the mother might abandon the remaining kitten.
Does anyone have any idea who would have killed the other? A snake? It could not have been the Soi dogs as they cannot get in to the grounds. Maybe there were more kittens and they are just being picked off one by one. So sad
A mess Siani but not unique. I've lived on many a soi where kittens would disappear one by one, even when sound asleep on a wall they would get snatched by a dog. Soi dogs seem to enjoy just killing them. Perhaps an instinct to preserve any available food that's around. They probably went with or without Mom on a exploratory trip outside our yard last night and were set upon.
If you take the injured kitten to the vet, feed it etc., it will be yours as it will then never leave, and Mom also. If you get Mom fixed you would have two good yard/house cats around taking care of any mouse/lizard problem. Decide wisely as it's a commitment if you get involved. Pete

Thanks Pete for the info. Yes, I love cats but do not want to adopt 2 at this time. My last cat lived until it was 21 years old, a lovely chap. I am not going to be here all the time so it would not be fair. At the moment the kitten is still alive, lifting its little head, moving, into different parts of the pot, not standing though, probably scared. Mum has been back, but have not seen her try to feed it today. Just hope it will be ok. I somehow doubt if it were the dogs as the kitten would not be able to get back up the wall from the outside. Just hope it was not a snake, it may come back tonight
Yes, nature is cruel, I used to loathe some Magpies for destrying a Thrush nest...
Anyway, we can only hope all will be well tomorrow.
You could always buy some rat poison and reduce your soi dog issue.
Ive "adopted" a clan of soi cats and feed em, let em sleep in the house, built em a little cathouse in the yard etc. I like cats, and cats keep mice rats n frogs away therefore any attractive food for snakes.
I f ing hate soi dogs.Mangy fecking vermin one and all.

Sounds like the kitten needs medical attention and is old enough to leave its mother. I will take it on and take it to a vet if you PM me.
Rat poison to cure the problem of Soi Dogs; is the person who posted that having an laugh? We all know there needs to be a solution and euthanasia is likely to be a part of one but rat poison; please.
It is possible that the Mother cat was trying to move them, as you have stated that her cover was removed. She could have carried them outside where the mongrel dogs got at them, and managed to save one by bringing it back inside.
(stragazer23, I don`t think that you have enough posts yet for a pm)
May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil know`s you`re dead!

Thanks for the offer, a friend has emailed me and said vet university, so I will decide tonight, see if Mum comes back again. I am watching it all the time.. I will keep you posted.
RE: Rat poison. disagree... I feel sorry for some of the dogs, it is not their fault at all.

Yes, it is possible..but it is quite a way back up and Mum was ok no marks or injury.
Good luck with the kittenand please let me know if I can help; I too feel sad for the soi dogs and wish there was a solution. a rigorous and affordable sterilisation programme would be a start!!

Thanks I will do. Thanks for your support, also all the other help from other members of the forum...thanks. It is good to know that we feel the same about animals. Tonight an update..Mum has been there in the pot, so hopefully she will stay and protect the kitten, hopefully she will feed it, its dark now, so will look in the morning. I think if is was not responding to her, she would leave...so it may be ok, I hope so.

Well, not really out of the ordinary actually, the locals poison them too if they become a problem and not to mention make sausages out of them to be sold at noodle stalls in exchange for a plastic bowl etc if they are unwanted. Of course this happens outside the cities but the meat is sold on into the cities. Anything is fair game here.
Careful where you buy your street food, "meat balls" huh, can add the word mystery in front of that one.
My feeling is that it's truly a danger to interfere with natures natural course of events, unless one is willing to take long term responsibility as Sandman seems to be doing. Siani is doing the right thing allowing the mother cat to direct things, as she doesn't want to adopt any animals at present.
If she were to get involved, the kitten and perhaps the mother would bond with her and then what to do? If someone couldn't be found to take the cats, they could end up at a Wat and in my opinion it would be best if the kitten simply passed now rather than just being set upon again by both dogs and cats in an environment like that. I am not a big fan of Wat care for animals, although I'm sure the Monks do their best. Pete

Thanks Pete. The news this morning is that the kitten is thankfully alive, the mother cat was with it this morning. So she can't have given up on it which may be a good sign. I have given the mother cat some food, I know many will say that in doing so she will always expect it from me. I thought by feeding her it would keep her near the kitten. As soon as she has finished I remove everything, so as not to attract other animals. What I have decided to do is review the situation at midday. My son is arriving back in HH and I will get him to come over and look at the kitten. He is very good with animals. We will then decide whether to take it to the Vet Hospital. Will keep you posted. Thanks for the support
