Fried Crickets

Post by THAI ROB »

Are fried crickets sold by the hawkers in Hua Hin. They are my favourite Thai delicacy which surprises many of the Thais when they try to joke with you with them.

Yes there are but I can not be too precise. I have seen a stall in the old temporary market but it was mobile so there is no guarantee it will always be there. I have also seen one at the Grand. They seem to move about the market areas and there are not too many of them as it is not a local or Southern thing to eat insects. I agree though, if cooked right they are quite tasty.

Never had any myself, but I recently saw this game show on TV and two hippies took a challenge to eat a whole bowl of fried crickets each they were somewhere in Thailand, anyway they where making it look easy until the fried crickets begun to cool off and then they were gagging and complaining and about to barf in a bucket. That totally turned me off at the thought of trying some myself if the occasion ever arose.
One must always revisit the past in order to move ahead to the future.

There is a Tak A Tan (Fried Insects) stall located in front of the food court in Tesco Lotus. There was a whole load of different varieties.

I don't know if they are any good as I've not eaten any fried bugs for a long time.

I've never found a stall anywhere in Thailand over the years where each and every insect available didn't taste like the oil/sauce that they were deep fried in. Take a blind taste test sometime. Yes, the consistency and "crunch" may be different but the taste is the same, IMHO. Pete
