Buyers Guide: building supply, home deco, bathroom, kitchen
Buyers Guide: building supply, home deco, bathroom, kitchen
Following my recent 'nighmare on Home Pro aisle' I thought I would start this thread so boarders can share their tips and recommendations on where to shop and where to avoid for building materials, home decoration, bathroom and kitchen utilities and appliances and generally anything used for household improvements and modifications. Prices, quality, availability and service varies a lot so this could become a useful resource.
I'll kick it off with tiles: Do not buy them in Home Pro!
Granite: Ta Yang (half way between Chaam and Petchaburi), there are a number of small yards on the main road where granite counter tops can be sourced at a fraction of the price of buying them in Hua Hin.

For Ceramic Tile, bathroom fixtures & quality water tanks there is a store on the left side of the road nearly to Cha-Am that has a big blue sign that says Dungaress. Large selection and inventory of tile and the high quality water tanks. Our builder orders his bathroom and kitchen plumbing fixtures plus bathroom toilets there also. Can usually find someone to help that speaks passable english.

Grey Granite - Go to the quarry near the Banyan golf course.

^ Yes, and if you want more specialized stone or color (marble or granite) go to a place in Petchaburi opposite the hospitals. I don't remember the name but they have a huge $ sign on top of their building. You can't miss it.

No other tips on where to shop then? What about bathrooms, kitchens, roofing insulation, plumbing, electrics etc. There must be good and bad recommendations ... or do you all shop at Home Pro?

Big home store in the south end of Tha Yang on the right. They have a big warehouse in back and better service and prices than HomePro. It's also called "Home" something, I think but I don't remember but they have a big showroom with bathroom and kitchen fixtures as well as a massive tile display.

Heavy Duty Mains Power Cabling, Plastic Plumbing Fittings, Angle Iron:
For larger cable like SWA (steel wired armoured), double insulated stuff, there's a good supplier down Soi 68 just on the bend at the railway tracks. They seem to have a fairly extensive range of basic 'plumbing' stuff, ie: blue plastic pwk & fittings, and a ton of angle iron. Basically more 'industrial' type stuff.
Bathroom, Kitchen, Floor, Lighting, Bedroom, Lounge (finishings, tiles, equipment etc):
Look out for the massive new Boonthavorn store due to open in 4 months (they said yesterday) behind their current tiny outlet right on the Petchakasem Rd around Soi 36/1 - 36/2. If it's anything like their Bangkok mega-stores it'll wipe the floor with everything else in town imo. A small part of it was open the other day, although bizarrely their were shop-fitters working above yer heed
Until the main store opens though, they are mostly just displaying the more high-end quality/priced tiles that you generally don't see elsewhere in town.
Sanitaryware, Shower/Tap Fittings, Bathroom Shelves/Mirrors/Toilet Roll Holders etc:
Homepro.
Basic Range of 'White Goods', Water Storage Tanks, Water Pumps, Household Electrical Appliances:
Big Kiang on Petchakasem Road around Soi 75. Cheap prices, as good a service as any, deliver anything, but fairly limited range.
Every Construction Material under the Sun:
Not a shop in town but is useful for hard to source 'specialist' stuff and for detailed info/specs on different materials available... LINK
Examples from the website...:

Anyone know where you can get decent metal blade ceiling fans (not those fancy flowery ones in Home Pro), and roughly how much?

Cheers, plenty to chew through there.

Buksi, the last time I was at HomePro they had a decent looking brand of metal bladed fan. It came in two (rustic) colors, kind of a bronze and a gold. I was thinking about it for outdoors. They also have a small all plastic one for outdoors that only has 3 (fixed) blades but the design is incredible as it pushes more air than the much bigger 5 bladed kind. It comes in white and black (or could be dark brown) and has a simple dome light in the middle.
