Always high Baht/£ rate shown on here.

Post by usual suspect »

Every day I am on this site I check the exchange rate for Thai Baht/UK Pound in the column on r/h side..and every day (for 6 months now) it shows the rate being almost a full Baht higher than any Bank/exchange booth in Hua Hin..why is this? Is it something you lot do to keep the tourists en-route to HH sweet? Are you including some rare, vague exchange rate we will get if we change £10,000+ and invest in a Thai bank for 999 yrs for good luck and maximum return?
Just for future ref...what ever rate you people see listed here on the right..(today it reads 49.9)
accept it as being less (~48.9). Lets see the rate for 'the man-on-the-street' with daily cash to change please.

Generally finance sites such as XE, MSN Money etc show 'mid-market' rates, which are about half way between buy and sell rates. I don't know where this site gets it's finacial data from but chances are high that it's a mid market rate.

Displays highest rate available in Thailand I think.
Superrich exchange is in BKK.
Not in Hua Hin.

SuperRich in Bangkok are offering 49.8 today for 50 squidlet notes, so the rate doesn't seem far off. The reality is that ALL banks and exchanges operate off of market rates. The market does not even use this mid-market rate, it's the middle of the buy and sell prices. The banks take the buy and sell prices, then add and subtract from the official buy and sell rates(Their spread) so they make money on every transaction.

So, for example (Actually a pretty accurate one with todays rates...)

The mid market rate on sterling is 49.9
SuperRich in Bkk are offering 49.8 and selling for 50.1
Other banks are offering 49.5-49.8 and selling for 50.1-51
Exchange points in HH are offering between 48.5-49.2, and selling for 50.8-51.5

I've found that for larger transactions it's worth checking out the bank websites (They all publish on their sites) as well as SuperRich (www.superrich1965.com) for rate comparisons. If you're exchanging a LOT it might even be worth a trip to make the exchange, but in most instances not.

NEVER exchange on weekends--there are no markets or banks operating, so the exchanges widen their spreads to absorb the extra risk that there might be a major shift in the markets before they get a chance to get out of any heavy positions they may develop.

Of course, if you're exchanging a few hundred squidlets, then it really doesn't matter--you probably won't lose more than 1 pound in exchange rates if you're changing anything under 500 pounds....unless you do something REALLY silly, like change at an airport, a hotel, or a tourist rip-off joint.

I went into the Kasikorn Bank in an average mall today (not in HH/BBK etc) and they were offering 49.4 baht for a pound.

So, I guess that's only half a baht out.

Usually, I look at the rate on the forum and knock off about 0.5 baht and you're pretty close.

The above mentioned site about 'daytodaydata' exchange rates is pretty useful and is updated all the time.

Haven't been along for a good few month now, but everytime I have been to HHAD's offices they have always honoured the rate shown on the forum that day.

Didn't realise it was on the high side though, will have to go more often. Give 'em a go...
