^^ Go west. More fort, less lighthouse.

Lindos said ancient Greek lighthouse - ok, forget the lighthouse bit. Old, but not ancient. Again, right part of the world, but go west.

Perhaps something to do with Gibraltar. Looks like the type of terrain, but....but....but....could be Malta or Sicily as well. :D Pete

I beleive it is a "Martello Fort", but just where escapes me, as they where built all over the World.

It may be at Saint-Florent, Corsica. Built at Martello Point, and hence the name.

While waiting for the quizmaster's feedback on that pile of bricks, might I offer this quick: who am i?

This man lived in Asia for many years and kept returning.
He was a legend to many and certainly in his own mind with an inflated ego, an Eloquent speaker that once had a future president as an aide, They disliked intensely each other’s styles
A risk taker with other’s lives, with both brilliant and lousy ideas
In the end caused more damage than good in pursuing results
Seen as ruthless in putting down rebellions and civil unrest

Who was he and who was his aide?
