An Ugly Spectacle
Before I start, this is a thread regarding the meeting that was held to discuss next season's pool league, so anyone not interested can choose to stop reading now. However what it looks at is wider than just the pool league and I believe covers an issue which is important for everyone here. I would like to request that anyone who contributes to this thread does so within the rules of this forum so that this thread does not get locked/closed as have the previous ones started by others; this means no allegations against specific bars or individuals - it is the issue and not the perpetrators that needs discussing on here.
The facts of the matter are that this meeting was held this week, and it was announced that a change was being made to the top (Premier) league which was quite surprising to say the least. Essentially it was previously a division of 8 teams and the bottom 2 were relegating to be replaced by the top 2 of the league below (the Championship) - this meant that Mondo and U-Turn went down and P & P and Billy's Babes replaced them. However, it was also announced that the teams that finished 5th and 6th in that league had 'decided' that they did not want to play in the top league any more, and so were dropping down to the next league. The reason given for this at the meeting was that they couldn't compete with the other teams there. This seemed a bit odd to me, and even odder was that the obvious thing to do was to then replace them with the next two teams in the league below, but not only did this not happen, it was not even discussed, as the announcement continued to say that the top league would now only consust of 6 teams!
Now on it's own this may not seem such a big deal, but as the meeting continued it became more and more apparent what the real motives behind all this were, and I am appalled at what was said and revealed. Basically the 6 teams that remain in the top league are virtually all Thai, with the very occasional farang there, which just shows how good the Thais are at pool and snooker. The top league was previously sponsored and named the Premier Property Center League, and this will change to the Super League, with the sponsor and name going to the next league down. Whether this change is connected to the make up of the new top league I cannot possibly comment, but again it does seem a bit odd. The two teams that have 'requested' to drop out of the top league are, as far as I know, completely farang teams, by coincidence.
Now I come to the really shocking bit - comments were made during the meeting by several people, and mainly bar owners, which I can best sum up with a single quote; 'the Thai teams don't drink and don't socialise with us so we don't want to play with them.' This is not the first time I have heard farangs say this, and indeed it is probably true that some Thais don't drink or spend as much money in the bars (but then again they often don't have as much money as farangs), but to then effectively segregate them into a separate league because of this is nothing short of scandalous! The comments were coming from people who call Thailand home, and the level of hypocrisy is stunning. It cannot be good for the farang community's relationship with our hosts, as it seems to send the message that we don't want to have anything to do with them. One of the previous joys of the pool league was that you met new people and had a fun time with them, and it was particularly good when more of our hosts started taking part as well, but it seems apparent that not everyone shares this view. I don't want to use the 'R' word but some of the comments, and ultimately decisions are going to come across as prejudiced against the Thais. They are saying at best that people who don't drink/spend money in their bars are not welcome, and at worst that only Thais who don't are not. Whether it is commercialism or racism, neither are what I want out of the pool league, and I, for one, will not play next season because of this.

Great post Wanderlust.
Many farangs I know, players from different teams in the lower leagues, but not bar owners/captains so not enough 'in the know', have also heard these rumours recently and obviously your post confirms it.
We too are disgusted by it, it seems to be based on greed as opposed to 'R' from what we can see. Still totally out of order.
As we understand it the pool league was not set up to enhance the bars profits but as a social thing, where people can meet and mix with the Thais. Even if the away team does not order a single drink, the bars food expenses are covered by the home teams drinks.
Lots of us now have Thai friends purely as a result of the pool league.
The many people I have spoken to about it know of several of the bars involved, and have vowed to order one coke each when our teams play at their bars. If they return the favour at our teams bars, then we will personally make up the shortfall ourselves.

It really saddens me to read these posts (and the post in the other recent threads). At the moment, I'm only a regular visitor to Hua Hin, but hoping to settle within 2 years.
I have played pool in some of the bars where they put out a predominantly Thai team, and I've made some good Thai aquaintances - on top of that, some of the players are really good. The overall standard of Pool will drop significantly.
One of the main attractions (to me) of Hua Hin is the way Farangs and Thais seem to live hand in hand. I've been to other resorts in Thailand where the only Thais you meet are those serving you. This segregation could be the start of a very slippery slope. Buying a single coke is a good start, but from experience this sort action soon gets overtaken by events and things soon return to normal.
As players, don't you have a say? There must be lot more players affected by this than greedy bar owners - can't you find a more effective way of protesting/making yourselves heard?
I honestly hope it sorts itelf out before it escalates in to something worse.

Wanderlust,
From the meeting, did you get the impression it was most of the 'lower league' teams (bars) that were up for this split, or just a few ?
If it's no more than 50% of the teams, then is there not an option for the organisers of the 'super league' to invite those teams now not happy to join a '2nd division', therefore retaining Hua Hin pool leagues based on the spirit they it was all originally set up for.
If we don't do that then maybe the Thai teams will think we are all happy with it, and all anti them.
Just a thought,

Burger,
Although I appreciate the idea of only buying a coke, I think the only really effective way to object is to not play in the league to show your disgust that this sort of thing is effectively sanctioned by the organisers. I am not advocating a rival league but those who feel the same way can always come along to Johnnie Walkers (who are pulling their teams out completely) every Wednesday instead for some pool fun, where you might even get to play a bit more than you can in the current league format. If any other bars also pull out then we can arrange some friendlies between us. I have to say also that I think the issue of buying drinks or not is just being used as an excuse, as there are many people who visit the bars, in pool teams or not, who don't spend much money there. One of my own team, a farang, is teetotal, for example. You might just as well herd all the teetotallers into one league, or all the people on prescription drugs who cannot drink into another, or all the guys who have given up for their health into yet another. It is being put across as 'just a coincidence' that things have turned out this way, but I don't believe it.

Whereas I can sympathise and agree with the sentiments of anti-racist campaigners the rest of the complaints lodged on this site in many different threads now in other ways completely are factually incorrect. It is extremely unfortunate that someone made unnecessary statements at the begining of the meeting. These were not only detrimental to the Hua Hin Pool Leagues management but as they were made soon after the start of the agenda procedings they then flavoured the rest of the meeting.
The comments made on various postings and a PM that I have received are regarding the determination of who plays in what league, the naming of the leagues (which I believe is a complete irrelevenace anyway) and sponsorship are all without any fabrication. All of these comments are incorrect and are based purely on assumption. Only three people have been involved in all decisions after consultation with the sponsors.
The overall sponsor uses his name and so do the other sponsors in their relevant areas. The secondary sponsors have been The Premier Property Centre, All in Hua Hin and Hua Hin Kebabs. Sponsorship is required to avoid players having to pay for membership, which is what happens in virtually every league in Europe and North America. One of the main reasons for arranging sponsorship was so that Thai players and bars would be able to compete for free.
These people that were at the meeting had the chance to bring up any matters of concern after the decision election has taken place. Apart from any issues regarding importing players from Pattaya I am not aware of any objections.
As for the alleged converstaion made between bar owners regarding the Thai teams not dinking enough. I did not hear it myself although there were a number of private converstions going on at the time so I have no doubt that the converstaion took place as I do not believe Wanderlust would have any motive for inventing it. To enter a private conversation at an open meeting is not only pointless in itself but also disruptive to the meeting as a whole. The meeting should follow the agenda provided with other issues being rasied at the end where they can suitably be taken on board or dismissed as being unworkable whatever the case may be.
As for announcements being made about a super league being made. The fact was that a proposal was put forward about the league being reduced to six teams. There was also a question on the voting form to find out if the majority of teams wished for all leagues to be reduced to six teams.
If anybody present at the meeting had objections and sugestions why were they not brought up at the end of the meeting where they could have been dealt with. One of the main reasons for the proposal was that three of the teams in that league (and only that league) did not wish to extend games into December and two teams from that league wished for formats that were not compatible with the other two leagues.
Comments have been made to me over the last season that are now being retracted and contradicted. Also on now three occasions (possibly four when I get a response from an email) that have been complete fabrications laced with very inastute assumptions. Before anybody asks I am not prepared to give names and point fingers which keeps in line with the sentiments of Wanderlust's statement.
As for Thais teams not spending as much, this may be true although I have not kept any record myself and nor has my wife who would spot it more quickly than I would. On a season by season level the amount of business in a bar increases when they are involved in the Pool League. Also what I have noticed is that when the Thai players are made welcome as they are in SugarCane, Octopussy and P & P bar they will drink in that bar on a regular basis and not just show up on Pool Nights. Of course none of this is black and white and individuals within teams all do their own thing.
What I can not understand is why people can not get out and enjoy their pool nights and bring up sugestions though the proper channels instead of huddling in some bar corner planning disruptive tactics that serve no purpose whatsoever. As far as I am aware none of these issues has been raised through the proper channels. The Pool League is run democratically. If people don't raise issues until it is too late how the hell are the organisers supposed to deal with it.
At this time of the season all issues should have been raised and dealt with and the task of administrating the league should be being undertaken. What the effect the distractions have is to take time needed to create schedules, recruit new teams and produce documentation. This results is errors in scheduling and documentation and means that less teams are involved on the leagues.
Anyway I have spent too much time with this already and have other things to do. I hope everybody involved can resolve their issues as soon as possible. And my final comment.
KEEP POLITICS OUT OF SPORT.

This comment sucks,

The comments you have made regarding racism were made by the owner and captain of the 'edited by admin', they have been relegated so I think a little jealousy, they just are not good enough. They feel that the Pool League should consist only of farrang because they spend more, both own bars (edited by admin) which are a front for prostittution so are both hypopcrites.
I have known the owner of 'edited by admin' for many years and I regard him as one of the most decent guys around.
I was not at the meeting and do not play in the league, but I reall do not think this owner would act in this way.
Mike.
**Mike, this post has been edited for two reasons - one it does not appear in this thread but in another related one which has been locked, and two it was specifically stated at the beginning of the thread not to name any names. I do however agree with what you say about that owner, but he dumbfounded me at the meeting.

I think the relevant point here is whether or not any teams from the lower two leagues now want to stop promotion/relegation between the top division (this season called Premier Property) and the 2nd division (this season called All-in-Hua-Hin) ?
My captain could not attend the meeting so do not know the answer.

Rather than pulling out of the league or some other similar actions, I'd suggest that everybody would go back to the drawing board. I can't see any good coming up from forming rival leagues or anything similar. Surely there'll be space for further negotiations. If I remember correctly this is not the first controversial meeting we've had. I myself missed the meeting so I can give no comments what happened during it.

A good post Guess, and I am glad that you have put your perspective on it. However it raises more questions than it answers; firstly, there was no organised vote about the top league being reduced to 6 teams, and it was presented as a fait accompli in the opening text of the meeting agenda
Secondly, as you say, there was a proposal to vote on to find out if the majority of teams wished for all leagues to be reduced to six teams. However this was rejected unanimously, so again, why the difference for the top league?
Thirdly, I brought up countless objections during the meeting on many issues (so much so that I was called argumentative after the meeting), including the one we are discussing here; I also emailed you alternative formats and other suggestions and corrections to your draft agenda which were not put in and thus not voted on. The problem at the meeting, and this has happened before, is that those with their own agenda had the loudest voices, and many present did not want to go up against them for their own reasons. Consequently we have now got a pool league that is at the beck and call of the bar owners and sponsors, with no say for the regular players who contribute a lot of their takings. When team captains who are not bar owners speak on behalf of their team their views are politely listened to but ignored in favour of the bar owners and sponsors. Do you think it is healthy that the situation now exists where money or politics comes before everything else? I don't believe you do, because in that same agenda you state "The main objective of the pool tournaments is to get people together for a good fun evening out and to meet other people from other bars. This is the spirit in which the league was first started in 2002. The league has grown since then and changes have to be made but it is important not to lose sight of the original objectives." How it should be is that people have a good night out and thus the bar owners also make money, not the bar owners need to make more money thus we alter things so they can.
Fourthly, to claim Arsene Wenger style that you were not aware of comments or discussions going on about the Thai teams not being welcome in certain owners' bars beggars belief when you were sitting right next to two people who were doing just that, and actually prompted a very good comment from one bar owner, after many people had left, that this was the wrong way of looking at it. (the same owner who called me argumentative).
Finally, the only people guilty of "huddling in some bar corner planning disruptive tactics that serve no purpose whatsoever" are those behind isolating the Thai teams into the Super League; this has been an issue since I was running the league, with people complaining about 'having to play the Thai teams in dingy little bars' and leading to a very time consuming rehash of the whole league by you with less than a week to go before the start of that season. This capitulation to these people was what led me to quit my role in running the league, and now leads me to quit playing, as it rears it's obscene head again.
As the main organiser of the Pool League and the chairman of the meeting you have a responsibility to everyone who takes part in the league, and not just a select few with the most influence/power/money. I hope you feel able to face up to both the questions in this post and stand firm against the people who will ultimately destroy the spirit of the league if you let them. I don't envy you this task, and totally agree with you when you say 'Keep Politics Out Of Sport', but I am not talking politics, I would hope I am pleading for common sense and tolerance. I don't attach any blame to you, and think you have done a good job in difficult circumstances but this is too important for farang/Thai relationships to be left alone. The last thing we want is to make our hosts resent our presence here, and this, to me, is the thin end of the wedge.
Why were the next two teams by rank not invited to take their place? The teams invited to play in the Premier League are SugarCane, Lucky Shot, Rose A, Octopussy, PW London, Lips, P & P and Billy’s Babes. Both Lips and PW London have chosen to play in lower leagues.

I asked a similar question at the meeting but was told it could not be answered now amd would be decided at next season's meeting. Make of that what you will.Burger wrote:I think the relevant point here is whether or not any teams from the lower two leagues now want to stop promotion/relegation between the top division (this season called Premier Property) and the 2nd division (this season called All-in-Hua-Hin) ?
My captain could not attend the meeting so do not know the answer.

Wanderlust,
Firstly read my post again and you will find some of the questions answered already.
I do not have time to go through every point to answer all the questions.
I am not going to give up any more personal time to enter into negotiations regarding the pool league. Please direct these questions to huahinpoolleagues@yahoo.com where they will be answered as swiftly as possible and only involve those who are involved in the participation and management of the pool league.
I have made a statement already on this forum and answered many PMS all in my personal time.
This is the very last post on the subject that I shall make as it is not my business to do so. I have just stated my opinion based on the knowledge that I have which I admit can not possibly be complete. However I believe I am in a better position than anybody to comment and will do so via the correct channels. I.e Hua Hin Pool Leagues.

I have read your posting's regarding this issue, I agree entirely with you. I was at the meeting and felt like throwing the scot biggot over the into the stairwell.
Instead of retiring from the league why not enter the senior division?
I will discuss the issue with my team and may also retire from the competion.

Do you have a concience????
I can assure you the comments reflected the meeting, perhaps you do not the guy as well as you think, absolutely disgusting.tuktukmike wrote:This comment sucks,

He is married to a Thai also, what must she think????
Do you have a concience????
Personally I think this merits all the time in the world, the meeting was poorly handled, the guy that made these racist remarks should have been made to appoligise and asked to leave the meeting.Guess wrote:Wanderlust,
