The barrage also acts as a tidal power station.
The locks at the ends give away the tidal aspect plus the photo shows cranes running over hatches covering the turbines.
Nice bit of Gallic engineering.
Well done! Great place, to visit! At some point in my life a few years ago I used to live about a mile away. We used to time our trips across the Rance as they lifted the road bridge to let boats through. The system was similar to a lock, the boats went into a chamber.
The Rance Tidal Power Station is the world's first tidal power station and also the world's biggest tidal power station. The facility is located on the estuary of the Rance River, in Brittany, France. Opened on the 26th November 1966, it is currently operated by Électricité de France, and is the largest tidal power station in the world, in terms of installed capacity. With a peak rating of 240 Megawatts, generated by its 24 turbines, it supplies 0.012% of the power demand of France. With a capacity factor of approximately 40%, it supplies an average 96 Megawatts, giving an annual output of approximately 600 GWh. The barrage is 750 m (2,461 ft) long, from Brebis point in the west to Briantais point in the east. The power plant portion of the dam is 332.5 m (1,091 ft) long. The tidal basin measures 22.5 km2 (9 sq mi)

Im pretty amazed someone recognised it at all. Mucho respect to you for that bro Its not a great statue but the massive working steam engine in the glass case behind him is astounding....looks like a big old pump engine or something. He'd have loved it.
Man this quiz moves fast....my head is spinning....or maybe thats no sleep and 6 gallons of coffee
.....where are we now?

Correct. Better known as the floating bridge and it indeed does or did that. It's on huge pontoons of some type. I haven't been on it in 29 years so it may have been replaced by now with something else. When I lived there you got quite a ride going over it during a storm when the water was rough. Pete

Not sure where you got those photos from Pete, but it does not look like that now. There are in fact two bridges now, the original ( The Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge ), and the adjacent new structure. ( Homer M. Hadley Memorial Bridge ).
The original structure sank in 1990 during repairs, but was recovered I believe.
