I'm not picking on you Hans, just clarifying for the record. U-Tapao was the only B-52 bomber base in Thailand, ever. All the others were fighter bases such as F-4's F-105's etc. The U-Tapao runway is 11,500 +- feet long and about 3 meters thick. Little known fact is that it also a back up landing base for the space shuttle. That's how well the runway was built to handle the B-52's. Do Europeans outnumber Americans living in Hua Hin ?

This American will be moving to HH in late August or early September. See you on the golf courses around HH. I'm not real proud of the USA's policies around the world, so this Yank will be very low key, in a humble manner of speaking.

You're right Lomu. but a lot did know, all of SEA who were scared to death of where the NVA would stop?...Our allies such as Australia, Korea and of course Thailand..and even China who was more or less helpless in those days. However, in hindsight I can now say the same as you.lomuamart wrote:Little did other countries know.
Sorry, Pete. A sad state of affairs, for all involved.
As a 17 year old and a political science major, I drew the line at the prof saying "march in this anti-VN protest or fail your major..." I told him to f'off. The rest is history so to speak but when your country calls, you go, or...you went in those days. I'm not too sure about the mentality of citizens these days and how many really would fight if called? Maybe just turn on CNN and "watch" world events unfold and say HMMMMM?...I'll determine if really a threat to the USA...?
Let's leave this one rest...this soup could get stirred more than the FOO shit thread..LOL. Pete

Jesus!..you don't have to be "low key" and you don't have to be "humble". Just don't be a braggart or a big mouth, but most certainly be proud of your country. People get tired hearing about America's history in this world over the last 230 years. They shouldn't, as chances are 99% they all wouldn't have the life they have if it wasn't for "our history". Will you or I be able to say the same thing 230 years from now?...definitely not.Pundi64 wrote:This American will be moving to HH in late August or early September. If you have or will have kids Pundi64, teach them the good parts first, then the bad parts and let them decide the future of the USA. Pete
Slightly off thread, but why are Americans so defensive these days - seriously?
I don't get the so-called bigger picture at all - in that they somehow are the worlds demon.
Most countries that stir up a rabble, including the uk, to protest, are all happy to clandestinely take the silver dollar, expertise, whatever. Be it via trade, or simply to prop up the economy.
There are an awful lot of hypocrites out there - journalists, Columnists (who the hell are these people?), Countries, Joe Public - where does it end?

I'm trying not to be overly defensive or provocative here. The reason that we even mention things like, "I didn't vote for Bush" or "I'm sorry about what my country did in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Guantanamo, Iraq, or..." is that many of us never approved those things that were done in the name of the country we still love. Like I said about Iranian immigrants to the USA in 1979, some people immigrate in order to get away from what their country is doing.
We're proud of our country, except for the things it does/did that we disagree with. Only one of my six kids has emigrated from the USA, to Ireland; one other son lived in Mexico, and my twin girls live a mile or two from Mexico. Americans are not completely isolated from the world, but it's hard enough to visit all of the USA, let alone countries in other continents.
And you could meet a thousand Yanks before two of them were identical. Even my twins.

. What you said about the different types of humor is true.
When I read some of the postings they sometimes seem to be coded with the Brit and English slang, I don't have a clue (no harm intended)

Let me know. I'll meet you at Mc Donalds and we'll wolf some double Mac's. I'll be wearing the T-Shirt with the Taliban guy screwing a virgin on the back. My Phillies ball cap, fanny pack, knee high white socks, Nike strollers and cargo shorts with money belt tucked safely inside. If you can't spot me, I'll be the one with the woman dressed the same way yelling" This ain't America, I can't find anything to eat, and...all these damn flys everywhere!!!"
It's all in fun P64, no offense intended.

There is a standard word in English for USA citizens...........Septics....ajarnfrank wrote:There happen to be five of us Americans, here in this moobahn, but I'm sure that's an over-concentration. None of the winter snowbirds are from the USA, but two couples are Canadian (Vancouver islands), so the flight once a year is not like mine used to be from Houston.
I don't get out enough, but when I do, there seem to be more Brits and Continentals than estadounidenses. Why is there no standard word in English for citizens of the USA? Even 'North Americans' covers about twenty nations.
Anyway, I'm glad to be here, rather than there, and no, I never voted for G. W. Bush, even if he'd been running for dogcatcher.
HMMM, it seems like our satire is going to turn very nasty. Please 'blue nose" clarify your statement?blue nose wrote: There is a standard word in English for USA citizens...........Septics....
Your word "Septics" does not exist. The word "Septic" does with the following definition:
"Of, relating to, having the nature of, or affected by sepsis.
Causing sepsis; putrefactive."
I hope you are very careful with your reply. Pete
