Rain cover for house door bell
Rain cover for house door bell
I rent a townhouse downtown and over 4 years have had to replace the digital door bell with a new one several times almost certainly due to water damage. The bell is partially protected by an inadequate plastic hood but what it really needs is a complete plastic covering or something equally effective. I have tried both HomePro and the old shopping mall so far but have been unable to find anything suitable. I cannot believe I am the only person who has this problem and would be very grateful for any advice you kind people can give me.

You can buy an outdoor weather proof light switch that has a flexible transparent section on the front cover. Its about 8 cm square and 4 cm deep, and made from PVC / ABS plastic. It maybe adaptable to what you have as the switch inside is easily removed. I have one on my outdoor garden lights and it has not failed yet. Not sure where I bought it, probably HomePro, but maybe one of the other electrical supply shops.

You could also try some transparent silicone sealant around any joins in the plastic casing unless it's happening at the place where the button needs some movement.

I cannot give you an advice, because I have the same problem. I put the bell button inside a plastic bag, but it does not help, because the humidity alone causes the trouble. So I buy 1 or 2 new bells per year.duan wrote:I rent a townhouse downtown and over 4 years have had to replace the digital door bell with a new one several times almost certainly due to water damage. When you take the button casing and mechanism off, check in there for little ants as well. I've had a few go bad and found hundreds of dead tiny ants encrusted on the connection terminals. I guess they go in to gnaw on the wire insulation and get fried when a current passes through. Pete

Where does the OP say that the "door bell" is on the door? Or that it is connected to the main power.
It may well be that the push button is at the front gate.

As is mine and all I've seen on houses here with a wall and gate. PeteNereus wrote:.......It may well be that the push button is at the front gate.

Yep, mine is on the wall/gate post and stopped working in less than a year but I left it.
I will check the wiring (and insects!) inside the push button when I am back if I have time. I presumed it was the wiring......

Re: Rain cover for house door bell
Just to confirm you are correct my bell is on the iron gate and on checking it today whilst still working the adhesive seal at the rear of the unit affixing it to the existing flimsy plastic hood has nearly failed after 4 days and I will need to buy some Superglue tomorrow unless anyone has a better idea.
Re: Rain cover for house door bell
Besides ants in the works, one episode we had was that the wire had been nibbled underground about halfway between the gate and house. Again the man said ants, but a larger underground variety. I personally think it was something larger, like a mole
We replaced the wire we could access by digging, with a much heavier gauge, and replaced the cracked pvc tube that allowed access to the wire and no more problems, knock on wood. Pete

If mine goes bad again, I'm going to get one of these. Pete
