Still using film?

Post by FatBoy »

I've never deserted film and wonder if there are any others still shooting film.

Would love to hear from you and exchange.

Some of my MF film stuff. Rollie 6002 and Velvia 50

Sorry Fatboy, but only the Rollei / Fuji film pictures showed up but none of the Rollie's :D

Sorry FB, I used to work for Rolleiflex GmbH as a technician and am pretty aware of their superiority of lenses & cameras.
Nobody will ever present a better picture than a picture taken through a Carl Zeiss soft Sonnar or ultra sharp Tessar lens.

It is simply the best of the best what ever Nikon or Canon says.

I've never worked for Leica but the result of their splendid lenses and cameras didn't show much.
Leica do use Carl Zeiss optics, the best in the world so it's a shame the content are protected by the owner!!!

When I was in the Navy, the official photographers all used Hasselblads, are they still around?

I still have some very good vintage Minolta cameras (as well as a Nikonos underwater film camera). I bought nearly Minolta's entire lens system and three camera bodies during the 70's, their flagship SRT 101 and two SRT 102s. I still have one of the 102s and an X700 (80's vintage, along with every attachment including motor drive and cordless remote shutter release) which, I believe, was the last all manual camera they made.

I really understood photography back in those days when the equipment used film and the cameras were manual and even dabbled a bit in black and white darkroom work, but I'm still trying to figure out the digital ones (apart from point and shoot automatic mode  ).
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Summed up recently.

"digital photography is like a man who shaves his legs:- clean and smooth but somehow not quite right"

p.s. I like digital and I don't shave my legs!

I liked vinyl record albums better than CDs or MP3s too. Even with the scratches and pops, I think the music was more full sounding. Oh well, can't live in the past. :(

Film is most definitely not in the past. Both Fuji and Kodak are launching new film stock each year and take a look at the Japanese market were film shooters are really active.

Film cameras that were going for a song on eBay a few years back are now fetching premium money.

Why? (I feel controversy coming on) it's real!

Film ain't dead - it just smells funny.

Good news, my old collector's item Minolta systems might fetch a pretty penny on Ebay!

Minolta's were great. My scanner is a Minolta Multi Pro and the output from it is damn close to a drum scan - one of the reasons I still shoot film

Yes, I have a Minolta slide/negative scanner that does an excellent job!

OK not a Thailand shot but an insight into film

Shot 1997 on Velvia 50 with a Leica M3 and 50mm F2 Summicron - recently scanned

Now please don't take this the wrong way - there is a photographic ignoramus typing this post.

You are posting some excellent photos (at least, they look good to me), which are full of colour. What I can't tell is are the photos so good because they are taken with film, or would a digital camera do just as good a job? You seem to be name dropping with the type of camera and lens you are using (I personally use a point and click). The results look very good. Have you tried taking the same photo with a digital camera of the same pedigree (if there is such a beast)?

Just asking out of idle curiosity.
