Just picked these two items up on the bkk post.
The Dhospaak deal just gets murkier and murkier. If hotels want the English commentary, they can sign a deal to get it. So Dhospaak obviously does have the rights to the English commentary because otherwise it wouldn't be in a position to make such a deal with the hotels. Not content with this, Dhospaak is now reportedly refusing to grant broadcasting licences to any entertainment venue that doesn't stock Beer Chang. Dhospaak is behaving like the mafia and getting away with it.May I suggest to all frustrated expats and tourists that, while you're sitting at home or in a bar watching the World Cup with Thai commentary, you avoid drinking Beer Chang and opt for something much more civilised like Heineken or Singha. You won't feel half as bad in the morning and it may stop Dhospaak from behaving in such a despicable way again in the future.
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports yesterday sought co-operation from tourism operators to help boost tourism revenue to compensate for slower economic growth over the next seven months. Tourism agencies, led by the caretaker tourism and sports minister Pracha Maleenont, yesterday met around 70 tourism business operators and tourism associations to discuss the feasibility of stimulating the country's tourism industry during the third and fourth quarter of the year.
So now not content with destroying the real estate industry for a while they seem intent on letting their personal greed destroy their tourism industry.
I remember this arrogance in 1996 and looked what happened in 1997.

I think the Beer Chang thing is only related to those bars in BKK that they own. Boon Rawd (Singha) brewery have been up in arms that their beers should be sold in the former's outlets.
It's beer wars and the concept of tied and free houses in the UK. It seemed to me that Chang brewery had climbed down as they only have sponsorship, not exclusive rights to sales. So, Singha won't be able to promote their beers during the World Cup. IE POS, lovely ladies etc etc.
Wasn't aware that the deal was linked to hotels or anything else, although they were trying it on.

Clive.
You should know me, always wear a condom.
Anyway who wants warm beer.
If you have seen me drinking out of a large tea mug then thats only when the bars are supposed to be closed and not serving alcohol.
Must admit Heineken never tastes the same like that though.
But i bet we have all done it when required.

Believe it or not I will be having a BBQ here in Wales this evening (2nd of the 'summer'!) at which I will be quaffing ice cold Carlsberg Export. Has to be said it's damn good stuff for a mass produced lager. Never been keen on the Heineken in LoS for some reason. A really cold Chang is a good drink IMHO, as is San Miguel. I was a bit disappointed that the San Miguel in Thailand seems to be modelled on the Spanish recipe rather than the Phillipino one though, as the Phillipino SM is difficult to track down here in the UK.
We all know that when in Rome..etc. But it is easy to sympathise with those wanting a non-thai beer. The laws of nature suggest that thai beer is the best thing to drink when in LOS, but can anyone explain why it is so skull-numbingly strong?
Beer of that strength over here is usually only found in a tin of Tennants Super Strength, the exclusive reserve of those in tatty overcoats, string round their trousers, an overwhelming odour of stale urine and an unintelligible glaswegian accent.
Much like me then I guess?

My guess is that it is to cope with the amount of ice that Thais usually put in it when drinking at home. In the early days of Chang it was never seen in bars but was the staple beer for the locals as it was cheap.Jim wrote:The laws of nature suggest that thai beer is the best thing to drink when in LOS, but can anyone explain why it is so skull-numbingly strong?
It is only Chang that is real rocket fuel though. Leo and Singha are just the same as premium strength lagers here in the UK: 5 to 5.5 %. They don't cope with the ice so well, hence my theory about Chang.
The fact that they don't have fridges is exactly my point Lomu - I reckon the Chang Meisters knew this and brewed up the lethal concoction to pre-empt the use of ice. Or would that demonstrate too much forethought? Maybe they just wanted to challenge drinks like 'See-sip.'
Ice in Chang is Ok BTW, as long as you drink it quickly and don't let the beer get watered down. When eating slimy stinky stuff in The Village, Chang with ice is preferable to warm Chang!
