^ I had mine measured when I was in my late 30's taking lessons in order to select a set of new clubs for my swing (shaft stiffness depends on swing speed) and it was consistently in the mid 90s mph... needless to say the pro told me I needed stiff shafts which I bought and still play with today. Maybe that's part of my problem; I'm sure in twenty five years my swing speed has slowed a bit, but the cost of a set of new clubs is out of the question, even new shafts. :(
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Swing speed obviously depends on which club your swinging, a driver with a longer shaft will always be a lot quicker than a 5 iron for example, and also your height. Most pros will generate about 110-120 mph with their driver, they can get maybe another 15% if they need it. Don't know where the Telegraph got 79mph from, maybe a 9 iron!

That's what I thought, cookmanchef. I try to swing like a pro, but I know my limitations!!

HHF - I bet your game would improve a lot without those stiff shafts! Nowadays with a swing speed of mid 90's you would be fitted with regular shafts so if your swing has slowed then they are unlikely to be right for you, especially on a driver.

Hi All From Aussie.

I am a golf addict. I just read a few of your Golf posts and like me it appears there are quite a few GOLF TRAGICS in HH. My family and I will be there for a holiday in September. I hope to meet some mates there for golf. Im stayin g at The Sheraton. I intend to play 4-5 games in 7 days. Will I need to hire a car. Ive been told to meet at Bernies to organise a game/s.

Any suggestions / tips would be appreciated...

-Places to eat
-Best courses to play
-Cha Am - worth a visit ?
-Any tourist spots that my family could visit whilst Im at golf?

As far as the courses are concerned, have a look here: http://www.tourismhuahin.com/golf-huahin.php
Everyone's got their favourites and Black Mountain, Banyan and Springfield are right up there.
Further afield, Kaeng Krachan ( 45 mins) and Royal Ratchaburi (1.45 mins) are worth looking at. Dragon Hills is also excellent but I'm not sure of its current condition.
As far as car rental is concerned, that's up to you. Return cost to the courses within 30 mins of town will probably be about 800THB. Just give the driver a time to come back to collect you rather than have him wait.
Bring your handicap certificate over and then have a word with Bernie about playing as a guest in some of the Society days.

Hi good day, any golfers? I had 1 round of golf on Sea Pine and Black Mountain on 22nd and 23rd respectively. Both the courses offer magnificant view and spectacular layout, I had thoroughly enjoyed it. The only issue was the caddy at Sea Pine, to my surprise she seem to know nothing about the course, always slower than me and look unfriendly. Its the exact opposite in Black Mountain, she is knowledgable and very friendly. I certainly look forward to my next Hua Hin golfing trip despite of the little bad experience

I never care about the caddy and seldom ask them for advice. I've never played with one anywhere other than Thailand as it is not the norm in the U.S. If you always depend on a caddy to help you, I don't think you will learn as fast as you would if you think the shot through and figure it out for yourself. I personally would rather go without them and save the money, but it is required here. I also think most of them actually slow down play. That's one of the reasons I enjoy playing Dolphin Bay regardless of it's condition... no caddy.

I haven't asked at any courses, but I would actually rather pay the caddy fee and then go without one but I'm not sure if that would be allowed.

The only problem is that you will have to carry or pull your bag - and heat is not your strength!! I have many friends here who are like you but they merely tell the caddy not to offer any advice or club selection but just pull the bag and clean clubs and ball - it works great and you will not get into a 'sweat'

JamesOB,

Is that the same Colonel Yao whose wife and family run the Pro shop at Dhannarat. If so I am really sad as he was a really nice guy and always a good friend.

Hi PJG,

Correct. The same MG Yao.

It was very sad for his family, since they just took him home from BKK on Wendsday night. He was obviously very well like by Thais and forigners from all backrounds, and will surely be missed.
