Friday night the gf and I tried 'Maldive', a new restaurant on Naebkehardt at the corner of soi 45. It's been open about a month, perhaps a bit less.
We had shrimp cakes, pla rad prik, tom yum talay, and rice.
The fish was fried perfectly. The sauce was a bit more of a sweet and sour than typical sauce for pla rad prik, but in the restaurant's defense, I can't eat very spicy, and pla rad prik does get kinda spicy if prepared correctly. My gf said the tom yum was okay, not fabulous but certainly not bad, and the shrimp cakes were tasty.
The service was quite good, including the maitre de (sp?) bringing a crew over to move us under cover at the first sign of rain. They have a live band playing soft rock, such as old Beatles and Eagles tunes, but they were not too loud for conversation. The band is on a balcony above the dining area. Much of the dining area is outside, though there are a few tables under cover. The restaurant is quite attractive.
Cost of the meal, including one large Leo, a Coke, and ice was about 600 baht. The restaurant's target demographic is definitely Bangkok Thais down for a weekend with some baht to burn.
It was a pleasant experience and we'll probably go back occasionally simply because it so close to home that we can walk.
Translations in the menu could use a little work. As I was scanning the whole fish page, I came across the item, "Boiled Wikipedia". I laughed so hard that I scared the waitress. Unfortunately, I forgot to get a better translation from the gf.
