Have to say, I do like the Pick-up Trucks available in Thailand - when I was working in Rayong in '97, I had one of the older model Hilux's.... absolutely great machine - sad loss when I left The Vigo certainly looks the part though, no doubt also does the job.
What's the deal with pricing/insurance on pick-up's in Thailand by the way? Is it reduced tax or no duty?

I'm searching for a tax guide Pharvey but no luck so far. Tax has always been kept very low as it's the vehicle of the masses here. Very little duty if any, as the vehicles and most of its components are manufactured here. Pete

If you buy a new one then you get the first year of insurance plus road tax free in the buying price. I bought a new style 4-door Triton last November and the insurance companies are quoting me about 16k for fully comp for the next year, and I reckon it's still under-valued at the amount they say they will give if it's written-off.
Regarding the new Vigo style, it's starting to look like a Nissan Navara a little at the front to me. It will be a good seller though, Toyota will sell their trucks easily here regardless of what it likes like, but the trucks here are good value no matter which manufacturer.
Now back in HH and ironically not had much time for trolling HHAD, too much to do in retired life However, I am glad to be driving my Toyota pick-up (4 door, black). I never had much time for pick-ups when living in Oz, and I only saw a handful of them in Singapore - but here in Thailand they seem to suit. I really like the Toyota and I've had mine a year now and no problems so far.
Question: to renew rego - do I go back to the dealer (same same as my motorbike)?
So, how much (approx) would one of those cost please?
Probably looking at 750-850k BB for the top of the range raised-up 4 door with all the bells and whistles, down to maybe 600k for the not raised-up basic spec (no LCD monitor etc) 4 door 2 wheel drive manual........cash price that is.
The 100k difference is to say that it depends on 2 or 4 wheel drive, auto (more expensive) or manual, downloading sat-nav maps, choice of colour (think white is now the expensive colour for some reason but can put on an extra 30k just for that ) etc.
But there will be a price and spec to cater for all needs and wallets.
No real reason at all Migrant, the most "off-road" most drivers here get is the pavement (US sidewalk) outside the kids school. Many buy it in a pretence that they are "off-roaders" and need it.....however, really it's more just a style thing or a snobbery thing related to status/money.
IMO, it just chews-up more fuel and is an expensive unnecessary optional extra, unless of course you own 30 rai in the country side and have the need to take your truck over the rice paddies, for some reason or other.
I can only remember having to use 4WD once around Hua Hin when I tried to do a three point turn on a narrow lane and got the back wheels in some soft mud but up in Issan I do use the truck to move farming supplies around and it is useful although not essential as the locals generally manage without it.
A couple of times I have managed to get the truck into some pretty inaccesible fields to pick up sacks of rice and save the locals having to carry them to a track where their trucks can get to. With the 4WD and added ground clearance it will go over the paddy dikes as long as you take it easy so as not to damage them.
I don't think many of the real big pick up's are made anymore? Ford used to be king of those things with the F150, 250 and 350. I think the 150 is all that's left, and it may have a V-6 in it now, not sure. Pete
