Exactly Nereus,
On my outward journey, I hit Victory Monument at around 7.30am. The skytrain was packed and although I only had two bags and went one stop to Praya Thai I had to force myself onboard.
At the airport link, I went up in a lift, sat for all of 20 mins in a comfy chair, had a standing fan put on for my convenience and there must have been all of 20 people when we baorded the train - about 3-4 carriages.
The city line train also terminates/arrived at Praya Thai as well and I noted the throng of passengers waiting to get on that at the other platform. I don't know where that stops - 7 stations according to governor - but I bet that's a little busy at rush hour before it also reached Swampy.
The people on the Express Link are only going to one destination - the airport. The train is almost empty which is a shame if that ever becomes a reason to cancel the service.
If I'm flying to the UK, I'm unlikely to book a ticket that stops off in Yangon, Delhi, Kabul, Baghdad, Istanbul, Munich, Amsterdam and Heathrow. Just get me there asap.
Same, same with the Express Link. I'm in traveling mode and want to get the preliminaries over ans done with with as little fuss as possible.
The only downside on the trip from HH to Swampy are the minibuses but most of them drive reasonably sensibly these days and rake about 2-5-3.00 hours depending on time of day.
A taxi sraight to Swampy will always be the best option, I'm just giving an acount of an alternative that I was impressed with.
BTW - I think the the City Line to Swampy costs 30THB. The extra 60THB for the Express Link is well worth it. Jeeze, a beer at Swampy cost me 180THB - I know I shouldn't have gone through passport control and should have found the Family Mart as advised by a member on an another thread.
Swampy Train connection
Re: Swampy Train connection
Sorry, I thought the Express Line had gone up to 150bt. Yea I guess it does depend on time of day. Also, I've only ever been on the city line going *INTO* bkk from the airport, and the train was virtually empty when I started. Filled out a bit on the journey, but once you've got your seat that's not so much of a problem.
Plus I guess you can put up with a bit more when you're facing the joy of coming IN to Thailand, rather than being in the depressing situation of leaving.

Re: Swampy Train connection
Yes, that's a good point about leaving - unless you know you're coming back a few days later!!
Re: Swampy Train connection
Never been in that fortunate position myself :p

Rush hour on the City Line:

May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil know`s you`re dead!
Re: Swampy Train connection
Clearly not; and I'm not sure what you wish to accomplish my posting that?

Well, if you have no sense of humour that`s your problem!Pleng wrote:Clearly not; and I'm not sure what you wish to accomplish my posting that?

Re: Swampy Train connection
There's a difference between not having a sense of humor and something just plain not being funny.
Seriously, I've tried to get the joke. Like, we're talking about rush hours on trains, yeah I get that. And you've posted a photo of a load of people on a crowded train... so right I see the link between the conversation and the photo... but... if you wanna enlighten me as to what the punch line is I'd be really grateful.

Re: Swampy Train connection
The station at Mak seems to be almost unused--the Express that I took went straight to PT--which for HHers going to Vic Momument is fine.
The other big news is that the Sukhumvit Skytrain line has opened the long awaited extension---5 more stations going as for as the ExhibitionCenter and beyond. This should help reduce traffic on Suky and makes the bus journey to/from Pattaya faster.
