I have on numerous occasions slowed down for the bumps at other rail crossings and seen both cars and motorcycles overtake me for going too slow. I hate these crossings because of the dangers involved and usually have double takes both ways before going through.

Don't think there will be any solutions to this problem in the foreseeable future, so guess we all have to be vigilant
I doubt that. There is 30 km/h speed limit much before the crossing, and as you said those speed bumps. I could think that to be happened with young pal driven drunk, but not with a mother driving with her young daughter.

That's right Buntsa, she was not drunk.
The engine flamed out when she opened her (the drivers) door and she wasn't able to restart the engine before she had to run away..
This was simply a tragic accident where nobody where at hand to help her push the car away from the railway tracks.
No speeding, no alcohol nor a telephone conversation involved, simply a highly tragic accident because she didn't have the muscles needed.

But yes, they've cut down the vegetation to a minimum so that you NOW, and after the accident, are able to see the tracks in both directions.

A very sad story indeed, and it might make one or two of us think (don't know if I'm included, too lazy to backtrack through the thread but absolutely ready to accept any hypocrisy claims heading my way if needs be) about what we may and may have not happened.

But my heart always stops a beat when one, knowing full well that nobody was at fault, takes sympathy with the child. It almost seems as if the mother(in this case)/father's life was peripheral to the child's. I personally view life as sacred (not in any form of religious way) and am just as sad when an adult dies as when a child does. If that makes me abnormal then so be it. Happy to be that way, to be honest.

Absent a temporary loss of capacity, e.g. a stroke or heart attack, or a train that has left the track, the driver is always 100% at fault in a car vs train collision. My sympathy is for the driver's victims.

Nope, unless he knew the car had that problem. The phrase "temporary loss of capacity" covers both human and mechanical loss.

No matter how you look at it, the driver of the car was to blame. Sad it is, but true nonetheless.
