The "fatboy' clue gave it away. Pete

Re: History Challenge
in 1990, with the introduction of the "Fat Boy", Harley once again became the sales leader in the heavyweight (over 750 cc) market. At the time of the Fat Boy model introduction a story rapidly spread that its silver paint job and other features were inspired by the World War II American B-29 bomber; and that the Fat Boy name was a combination of the names of the atomic bombs (Fat Man and Little Boy) that were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima respectively. However, the Urban Legend Reference Pages lists this story as an urban legendkalbow wrote:Fatboy + Harley D's? Just for a certain breed of rider

Re: History Challenge
Now I can see the connection with the 'Adolf Hitler' style haircuts; Harley-Davidson is from Milwaukee!
Re: History Challenge
OK, I'll have a pop at this.
At which battle in WWII was this document issued to accompany a medal, to who......and for what?
If there are no takers after a day or two then I'll post the pic of the medal.
Edit - With hindsight, perhaps better to post the medal (one side of it) to give a chance of getting it right........

Re: History Challenge
It says Stalingrad in the document so must be the battle of that city.

C'mon BG, you're the multi-lingual mod, guess you read Russky too man.
Yes, correct, for valour and the defence of that city.
I was hoping those that were fluent in Russian weren't going to post, forgot about you though. Ah well, next time.

Spitfire, I basically know the Russian alphabets and a few words, that's it and no more. Must be because I was born only 20 miles from the boarder.

Re: History Challenge
I seem to remember a medal, but the name is vague
"Order of Lenin" pops to mind, perhaps a starting point for others

Re: History Challenge
This is a medal for the defense of Stalingrad. Or Медаль За оборону Сталинграда if you will.
A turning point of WW2 and the beginning of the end for the Nazi regime.

Re: History Challenge
Yup...its the Medal For The Defence Of Stalingrad awarded to all veterans of the battle
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_for_ ... Stalingrad
as to the to who and for what
is it the medal awarded to Vasily Zaytsev (along with a new sniper rifle and scope)?
Or is it the medal awarded to a young (ish) Nikita "Niki The Farmer" Kruschev who was the general in charge of the defence?
Cant see the name on the certificate clearly enough to read who it refers to.

Re: History Challenge
You could be right there SM67, often they keep documents like this of the famous/heroic. Regarding Zaytsev's original sniper rifle, it's still on display in the Russian war museum in.....I think.....Moscow, could be another city though......as to the to who and for what
