Turkey

Post by PeteC »

Thank the Farmer Joe story about this one. There may be fresh supply here (other than Farmer Joe and HHHB, Hua Hin local) but I've never found it. The foreign food stores and Macro usually have frozen, and we get one of those perhaps twice a year.

Strange thing I've found when we've had Thai people over for holiday dinners is that they really don't like the drumsticks and other dark meat portions, my wife included. This is no matter how much they drown it in chili sauce and other Thai accompaniments. On the other hand, they will gobble down chicken legs, wings and thigh portions at the speed of light, as well as duck.

I feel that the dark turkey meat is great, and more rich than a chicken. Perhaps they just can't get their head wrapped around eating a turkey in general.... :alien: to them perhaps. Pete

EDIT: I would like to see what happens if someone serves up a goose?

I remember when Foodland in Patters had turkeys in at Christmas and cooked them to order - but don't know where they got them from Pete. Certainly in HH I think Farmer Joe could be credited with introducing Thais to Turkey. At one time his birds were the only ones available there, unless people wanted the hassle of a trip to Bangkok.
I remember one Christmas when there was a turkey shortage in Phuket. The guys who used to have JWs place before put a cooked Farmer Joe bird on the train...
Then another year Joe refused to supply the Hilton because they still hadn't paid for the previous years turkeys. Happy days.
A sprout is for life - not just for Christmas.

Always loved the dark meat (turkey and chicken people). My first wife was Korean, and her, and family, did not like turkey. Always needed rice, and kim chi, on thanksgiving.

Mrs M (Thai) is so so about it, but the last few thanksgiving I brined the turkeys which really made them more juicy, and got a "OK" out of her, which I considered a victory.

Of course both turkeys I cooked got eaten by our falang guests so I assumed they were good!!

In my experience, Thais are among the most unadventurous eaters in the world when it comes to trying something new. If force fed, however, one or two have been known to change their opinion!

Back in the 50's in good ol' Alabam we shared turkey with the farm hands for thanksgiving. Guess who got the dark meat and who got the white? You have one guess!

Thais splatter themselves with whitening cream in an effort to become Michael Jackson look-a-likes. Of course they won't eat dark meat if they can get white!! :=))
