Kuala Lumpur

Post by barrys »

I have to go to a trade fair in KL next week for 3 days

Does anybody know how to get the most economical flight?

Also, the trade fair is at KL Convention Centre.
Anyone know of reasonably priced hotel accommodation in the area?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Air Asia certainly offer some of the best deals from China and do fly from BKK - http://www.airasia.com/

Barry, there's any number of places to stay in KL. By Convention Centre, I am assuming you mean at Suria, whichi is about as central as you can get. A very good, close and reasonable hotel (in my opinion anyway) is the Impiana. I usually stay there when I am in KL. Close by is the Novotel and the Equatorial or Traders are more 'up market' solutions. If budget is *really* tight, the Comfort Inn on Changat Bukit Bintang is not too bad. Don't stay in a 'hotel 88' unless you are desparate. These are frequently used as short-time hotels both in KL and Singapore.

Should have added to that that KL's hotel scene is a little weird. The really budget places are so over subscribed that they end up being as much as, or more than a lot of really quite decent hotels. And a lot of 'backpacker' places are truly awful. I've visited some where people were paying more than a local 2 or 3 star, to stay in what was little better than a squat. Some top hotels are really not just good value, but actually quite cheap. If it is busy than prices like anywhere else tend to go up a bit, but there are so many in the Bukit Bintang area (about 15 minutes walk, or 2 monorail stops from Suria). Where it starts getting expensive, is if you go away from Suria in the other direction, or to the other side of Jalan JP Ramlee. Anything in the list I mentioned, or reasonably priced *but not absolute basement budget* around Jalan Alor, Changwat Bukit Bintang, Jalan Bukit Bintang or Jalan Sultan Ismail. Also plenty of bars and eating places in the area. I'd avoid places closer to Time Square, or along Puduraya.

I guess since we aren't talking about Thailand and HH it is OK to mention Agoda? If not, I'll get a mod-flame for it, but that is who I use.

Thanks very much for the help so far.

Got an Air Asia return flight including travel insurance, taxes and airport express shuttle for 5.4k - happy enough with that.

So now I'm trying to search fora hotel using Korkenzieher's tips as a basis - so many hotels in KL, though :?
