Hua Hin Floating Market partner dead in suspicious accident

Post by bapak »

A Thai language newspaper is reporting that Mr. Chin Bowon Jirapat, a partner in the Floating Market in Hua Hin, died Sunday night in a car accident in Petchaburi. He was driving a Mercedes Benz with his wife. Allegedly several vehicles forced his car off the road and it hit a power poll. The car was severed in two. Mr Chin's wife survived the crash but is in hospital in a serious condition.

The Thai newspaper says - Death due to accident or murder?

Nothing to do with the whole bust up with the ''original'' floating market? I understand partners went their separate ways during the build and now there are 2 competing markets in HH?

I was at the grand openingwith my wife last month and they (the owners) seemed in high spirits - very sad. This does nothing for HH's reputation.

If that's a Benz, it must be the baby model as looks very small to me. No signs of any airbags either. Even if deflated they're usually visible after an accident, and a Benz has them all around front and back. Pete

Sadly this wouldn't be the first time business conflicts and jealousies have ended in such extreme - and tragic - results. (If indeed the report is correct - presumably there were witnesses?) And sadly it probably won't be the last, as long as Thais seem to think that it is easier to eliminate any competition rather than to improve their own businesses. Or better still learn to live and let live amicably.
I'm afraid it is one aspect of Thai society which I still have trouble getting my head around.

Precisely! Have you ever seen two Thais fighting, as in punching each other? No, the immediately reach for a weapon. Piss one off and you don't get a few teeth knocked out - you get killed.

I have heard in the past that some Thais have the airbags removed or the sensors disabled, and besides, if you have an amulet on the dash you don't need any other safety features.

On a different note......Hua-Hin really does seem to be attracting a lot of trash these days.

The stubby wing mirrors and black door handles lead me to think the car is an early W124 'E series' Mercedes. They were built from about 1985 for about 10 years. After about 1989 the door mirrors were made bigger and handles were body coloured or chromed. Drivers airbags were optional and only after 1989 were passenger airbags available as an option. The complete separation of the front and relative lack of damage to the rest of the car suggests that it might have been a 'cut & shut' (two previously crashed cars badly welded together); a very common practice here.

I am thinking that this could be something else all together, we all know how driving skills are here. Not the usual way to handle a business fall out.

Guys,

Can we please keep this to facts, rather than local gossip (regardless of how reliable the source may be)?
