Thailand tops in massive global survey of expats

Post by PeteC »

I don't know whether to take this seriously or not, especially with Egypt coming in second. :? The article unfortunately does not give enough details of categories used and other factors considered. Anyway, they say the full results will be published in November and maybe then we'll get a better understanding. Pete

Not to mention Saudi Arabia in third place - a country I worked in for 3 years and more oppressed than almost anywhere you can think of. There has to be some concern about how/where the data was collected?

There's probably a massive foreign workforce in Egypt...I know there is in Saudi Arabia and Singapore not to forget the land of our choice ie migrant workers from Burma and Cambodia. Let's not get our panties in a twist over this!!!!!!

I have no problem with Thailand being in the number 1 position, as people come here for many reasons, including the sex trade (single males), hot weather (for those living in cold, damp, dreary places), and economics (for people living in places where prices and taxes are exorbitant).

In Saudi (#3) it has to be a foreign work force. They (the country itself) don't have a tourist visa and don't allow tourism of any kind. To live there, or even go there, you have to have a work visa, be visiting a family member who has a work visa there, or be a "card carrying" Muslim going on Hodge. Nobody who is not Muslim would choose to live in that country even if they allowed it. The only reason for a non Muslim to go there is to make more money than they could in their home country. Other than the possibility of scuba diving in the Red Sea, the place is the armpit of the world.

The entire article seems ridiculous to me as it doesn't describe a difference in a place where people choose go to live and retire and a place where people go to make some money and then get out as soon as they have met their financial goal.

Good point Dannie, and as an example of how massive this 'massive survey' was... this thread is just an hour old and has already had more people viewing it than people who took part in the survey in each country. Which was 34

This was only the results of the 'economic' and 'experience' sections, I suspect when the overall results are published which include the 'offspring' section about how safe, good a place etc it is for bringing up children, then Egypt & Saudi will drop down. Last year the country in 1st place, Bhuckrain, slipped to 16th place when that section was included. Maybe as economics features highly it's the amount of money you buggers earn in oil & gas, that's rating these Arab states highly!?!? Maybe it's cos only 34 people being surveyed in each country is hardly enough to get a concensus on whether or not it rained that morning

These were the questions the results were based on I 'think'...

Still struggling with the concept of 'expectations' mate, your in education aren't you :naughty:
I've said enough times just because I do not complain about things on a daily basis, does not mean they do not annoy or bother me, or disrupt our life a little bit. But the way I look at it everything that has ever been raised as the latest 'Thailand-only' disaster to strike us... was already in existence loooong before we chose to make the place our home. So we should have expected it to happen if we'd bothered to research the country we were moving our families too, not that I bothered too mind. It's alright to point the negatives out, say how wrong they are and propose positive 'solutions'. But the whining on about 'this can only happen in Thailand', 'they're so backward', 'their culture is all wrong' etc etc just highlights our own shortcomings and inadequacies. In a nut-shell we look like whining stresscases, no wonder Thais look at us strangely at the steam starts seeping out of our ears... before they smile politely, look away and mutter to themselves... 'pfff, yeah whatever mate' :D

Nice rant SJ.......top marks.

Those who accuse others of being a cynic are open to being called a hopeless optimist by others (not directed at you SJ and just a general observation).

There's a fine line between being a realist, an apologist , a cynic and an optimist. There are all around and active on forums here.

As an aside.......good banter dude, give you that.

I've been through the gambit... when I retired I was an optimist, while building our home I became a cynic, then after the currency (and home devaluation) a realist, and now an apologist for being so cynical and realistic about what it takes (literally, takes from you, mentally, not necessarily financially) to live here.... :duck: :duck: :duck:

Yes likewise, I really intend no offence by it. Just one of my pet hates is the complaining about pre-existing stuff we accepted when choosing to live here, and this notion that Thailand is the only place on the planet these things go on. We all have traits that are fine with ourselves and others dislike, I'm constantly reminded of mine by others which is healthy I think as long as it doesn't get personal. As I said no offence Spits, buy you a beer when you're in town... do you ever visit Hua Hin, or just keep it quiet from the board muppets like me? Last time I remember you threatening to come was Norseman's 80th birthday do...

Yeah, certainly not just Thailand and I have a 'pop' where I think I want with China/UK/US and elsewhere too. Suppose it's just that we live here which is why we comment so much, but not all is negative by a long shot.

I'll let you know when down there next time and I'll hold you to that beer, maybe we might be able to tease the viking and HH's Hugh Heffner out of retirement too.
