Genetic testing in Thailand?

Post by stargazer23 »

Am searching around to see if there is anywhere in Thailand that carries out genetic testing. I carry a gene for a condition that may be passed onto a child if my partner also carries the same gene. My new partner and I (I am Western and he Thai) would like to have a child but it would be good to know whether he carries the same gene or not.

Has anyone had experience of this? Ideally we would like to give blood in Hua Hin but realise that might be too much to hope for!
Thank you for any help.

Check at Hua Hin General Hospital.
I seem to remember an American with Thai wife had a similar query and it was resolved at this hospital.
You might also check with Hua Hin Lab Center... phone: 032 634 935-6

Sorry bapak, I should explain my "tsk" - stargazer hasn't logged in in more than 3 months and lamlamp is blatantly not human!

A perfectly sensible question from stargazer IMO and not (as lamlamp seems to think) a strange request!
But as well as getting genetic testing I think I'd also be concerned about the availablity of appropriate screening and amniotic testing - depending on the level of potential risk.

I think most hospitals around here will be able to arrange this sort of test for you, although I would imagine the actual tests are carried out in Bangkok.

As for genetics changing all the time...........................sometimes it's better to say nothing at all I guess

I'm curious as to the specific gene? I'm usually asked by potential partners if I have a pension. :naughty:

It may not be relevant to the OP's specific needs but I don't see anything wrong with lamlamp's comment. The science of 'epigenetics' is a fascinating topic, even if not discussed here.

Hi MrP, it is possible that the OP is talking about talassimia, the blood condition, which is quite common in Thailand and other Asian countries. From what I'm aware, I'm no expert though and it would take someone like Doc Mike to confirm, that it depends upon to what percentage each parent is a vessel for the condition and if both parents are a certain combination of percentages then it can be a problem for any offspring, with the risk of an early death in said offspring.

My bother-in-law and his wife are both positive on talissimia and the doc says no more kids, they had one and it was OK, but that was a gamble apparently as they weren't checked before hand for the condition. So, nothing 100% but can be risky by all accounts.

However OP, if you are referring to something else then forgive my nonsense.

............I carry the deletion for SMA type 1; Spinal Muscular Atrophy (Werdnig Hoffmans Disease) ; responsible for more child deaths in the under 1's than any other genetic condition (in the UK). See http://www.jtsma.org.uk/ for more information. My first son was 5 months old when he died and his death will haunt me for the rest of my life.
