World's best Whisky

Post by Spitfire »

This is in the BBC today.......

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-s ... s-15423862

Apparently Old Putney, a 21-year-old single malt from Wick, Caithness was voted the world's best whisky in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2012.

Never heard of the two US Bourbons that came in 2nd and 3rd though, anyone tried any of them or know about them?

Whisky expert Mr Murray tasted more than 1,200 new drams before deciding on the winner.

He said: "The 21-year-old Old Pulteney absolutely exploded from the glass with vitality, charisma and class.
Well, I'm no expert, but the last thing I want from any whisk[e]y is explosiveness and vitality. Slick, smooth, smoky, velvety, those are the kind of adjectives I'd use for my whisky.

Mind you, if he'd had 1,200 drams before he decided, I suppose he can be excused a certain overexuberance...

I've just been to a shop here in Luxembourg where I am at the moment and they didn't have any. They did have a 12 year Old Pulteney but seeing as it was almost 50 euros it seems likely that a 21 year might be quite a pricy tipple if you can find it.

It is advertised on the web at about £75 for a 70cl bottle, but if it is meant to be "the best in the world" then it is probably worth trying - somebody bought me a litre bottle of JW Blue Label and whilst it is quite nice, I don't think it is worth the £170 or thereabouts that they charge!!

Actually that's not such a bad price if it is as good as they say, I expected it to be higher and I would give it a try if I can find any.
I agree on the Blue Label, it's very good but not worth that much when you consider that Black Label is a pretty good blend for a quarter of the price.
As for the Welsh, one of my colleagues brought a bottle of Penderyn back a couple of months ago and it's a pretty good malt.

Well if you excluded the Hi-sos and did a poll of Thai ruralites top of the list would be Lao-Khao with red bull and in second place would be snake blood with honey and Lao-Khao

I'm not a great Whiskey drinker but if I must have one then a single malt goes down well - especially Highland Park

I really fail to understand how Johnny Walker ANYTHING (No offense JW) can be considered as good whiskey - but somehow the marketing boys have won over the majority of S.E Asia.

The JW Double Black Label that you can get in airport duty free shops is really quite good, it's like the original Black but with a more smoky flavour. I know some people turn their nose up at any blended whisky but some of the better ones are still worth drinking and of course they're much more available in some parts of the world.

Monkey Shoulder Triple Malt is a favourite of mine.

It is a mix of three different Single Malts - Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie.
It’s smooth, sweet and very easy to drink.

Current favorite, and it changes periodically, is Talisker
