Shipping large objects from Thailand to Europe?

Post by suede »

... If I were in bangkok, and bought myself a guitar - can I somehow mail it home to me? Would that be very expensive?

Both expensive and I doubt the guitar will survive the transport.
If possible you should try to keep it as part of your hand luggage.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

I agree.

And anyway, a guitar isn't that large is it? Most airlines should be OK about taking it on as hand luggage - especially if you don't have much else.

I always carry mine on with me ... putting it in the hold is as good as kissing it goodbye unless you have a decent hard case.

You can bring the whole band along...nobrob with a guitar. When I saw ur topic name I thought u mean a car or something like that.

Once we brought along 2 guitars on the plan and they survised from BKK to Copenhavn

you guys must be flying on better airlines than me. i have never been able to get a guitar on as hand luggage. always goes in the hold.
i am a pro muso who has travelled the world about a million times with guitars, and airlines are always a big problem when it comes to guitars.best way is buy a decent case, pad it out inside with a towel or bubble wrap . loosen the strings, and sign and send it as a fragile item.
i have never broken one yet but i do use very sturdy cases for the guitars.usually the excess baggage charge is fairly small. but with the recent attitide of most airlines now especially in farang countries[ie: lets find as many ways as ripping our passengers as possible] we are always restricted to 20kg max of luggage!! not much is it?? this is especially applicable to australia and i notice air asia in thailand and malaysia are particularly strict with this.

I brought mine over from England. I sent it in the hold and it was fine and yes i have a hard case. I cant see the point of a soft case anyway? why would you spend a lot of money on a guitar and bung it in a soft bag where it could get damaged even whilst being carried..

Both last statements are true. Some airlines and routes have a limit for the size (and soimetimes the weight) of hand luggage.

So check with the airline first and get a response in writing. Often sales will tell you one thing when selling you the ticket only to be told the opposite by the departure ground crew.

On larger aircraft there are sometimes areas put aside for carry such items that are taken care of by the cabin crew.

When professional bands travel everything goes in the hold in specially made flight cases. I have seen these for sale in Bangkok. They will withstand being thrown with other lauggage onto the plane and off again onto the truck.

One will probably cost more than the guitar though.

I suggest you take the guitar with you unless you have other things to carry then I would insist to request a "Fragile" sticker for the Baggage handlers. (Baggage handlers don't give shit about our bags anways). One friend of mine has put his beloved guitar und an Airplanes Belly without labeling it on his flight back to America from Eastern europe. when he arrived he fount his guitar broken from the neck down. Man he was pissed.

Another tip here that I am afraid will not help with the guitar.

I have always just walked on the the Aircraft with the large object protected merely by a pair of XL boxer shorts.
