Railway station question

Post by jennyvicaus »

Hi,
I am unsure if this is the correct area to find the answer to this question however......
We are staying in Hua Hin in early December, and we will be catching the train from Bangkok to Hua Hin. This is quite exciting for us,except a small nagging worry. As an English speaker, how will I know that the train is at Hua Hin station? Does it terminate there? If it continues on, is the station signed in English so we know to get off. This question will be quite absurd to regular travellers I know, but I'd love an answer. Another question -how is Hua Hin actually pronounced -in (Australian) english. Sorry, the questions are basic I know. We are very excited to be travelling to your area.

Hua Hin is pronounced Wa Hin. That may not be exact concerning the way Thais pronounce it, but you'll be clearly understood. I assume the conductor announces the stations before arriving at each, but someone more familiar needs to confirm that. Have a great holiday! Pete

If you wake up from a nap and find yourself in Singapore, you'll know you missed us... :D
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

The train station's name is in English. The conductor for your carriage will normally announce where you are.
If worried, make a note of when you should be arriving and just show your ticket to another Thai passenger and they'll nod or shake their head.

Thank you to all respondents. I'm happy with what you have told me - even to wake up in Singapore! :o
"Wa" hin. Now I can tell people where I'm going. Thanks again.

Providing you're awake when you stop at the station, you can miss it if you take note of the photo in this thread since no other station around here looks anything like it.

Hope you have a great holiday.

Its a short trip. Just pay attention to what is outside the window.

Train stations have signs with their name on it facing the track. Hard to miss if you are looking as train pulls into station.

Only time in 3 trips i've heard conductor announce station it was if he tried to uphold the letter of his job requirement while totally violating the spirit of it. In other words spoken softly and passing too many rows of seats before repeating the station call.

Its not unknown for a train to spend 10 mins in a station so that all the tea and refreshment ladies can get on to sell all the tackle, when i caught the train from kanchanaburi i missed the connecting train halfway as the tea ladies stayed on without the train moving for 30 mins, it only added 2 hours to the journey, next time i will just buy the whole tray of refreshments, its a nice run down but they need to remember that people are using it as a mode of transport and not a snack bar

The station announcements can sound strange to newcomers. For example over half way through the trip you will hear them announce 'Pranbooreee' and 'Petbooreee'. Then as you get closer to HuaHin you will pass through ChaAm and start to see the high rise hotels (on the left as you face the front of the train) They look quite a way off with little inbetween the hotels and the track. At night you will also see them clearly due to all their lights.
Then you will go through a short tunnel which goes under the HuaHin airport runway. Get your bags ready and move close to a door on the left. It will still be about 10 or15 minutes before the train pulls in to HuaHin but you won't miss it. Enjoy.

Thank you very much to all. I am feeling much more confident now.
I feel I can now tell husband and teenage son that they don't have to worry, I have it all under control!! I haven't told them about the airport transfer mini-bus yet.
I am sure we will enjoy our holiday, I'm really looking forward to, and expecting, a huge change from rural Victoria, Australia. Such fun -our first holiday abroad, hopefully the first of many.
Thanks for all the info, it really has been, and will be, useful.
