Isaan Restaurants

Hi All,

I am looking for good Isaan restaurants in town, preferably within 2 miles of Chomsin as I am on foot/tuktuks. What are the current favourites?

There is a new one called Maldives on the corner of Naebkahart Road and Soi 45.

Pretty decent food at a very good price and cheap beer.

I'd really like some recommendations too, Sparky - I've had great stuff from carts but don't know where to go restaurant wise. I remember reading on the forum about a good place on the railway road but can't remember the name....sorry I can't help but hopefully others with more local knowledge will.

Kate..Kim's Kitchen sits South of the rail Stn.along that road.. they do Issan food on their menu.
Also..next to Kim's is a great little place that sells wonderful Pad-Thai each evening for about 30B.

On the main road by soi 134. Been twice with Thai friends. Very good. There is a large statue of a chicken outside. No English menu so practice your Thai. Cold beer

Best in town ( so we think and certainly convenient ) is two block south of the Market Villeage mall on the same side of the street. Dont know the name.

With Isaan connections here, we used to frequent "Sa pee Lee" Isaan Restaurante out by Narasuan Camp. It is a place immensely popular with the Bangkok crowd and with tour busses ( we used to get a kick out of watching them preset 30 tables with uncovered food and which was left to attract flies for 30 minutes before the bus arrived and the hungry unaware passengers arrived at the feast!)

But yesterday was our last visit there. Terrible service ever since they "remodled" and we can not figure out why. Som Tam took 40 minutes and we finally cancelled the order. No rice for about 35 minutes. Same thing happened on two visites before this . ..we were giving them a last chance. of course the place has zero ambiance to begin with ..right on Petkasem, plastic chairs, metal tables and no attempt at decoration so all they had going was the Isaan food.

Oh yes . .the Sap y lee restaurant was only about one third full when we sat down yesterday . .up to about one half full when we left. Two tables near us got their food ( including rice) before we did through they sat down after us. It was also about 40 minutes before they brought the obligatory cabbage, green veggie sprinkled with ice.

Seb Neur, about 200 meters south of the railway station is the best we've found in town.

Mr. Crazy 88: I ran across your name on this forum when searching the internet for information about Magnus Hughson's passing last April. Please email me the details of Magnus Hughson's passing,drcslater@Aol. I am his exgirlfriend in Florida and care about him. I just found out today and it was almost a year ago. I don't hang with his circle and live an hour away not keeping in touch with his friends, until ran across his best friend Martin today who told me. Please let me know who else I can contact if you don't know what happened to him. He was very healthy and I am shocked, and saddened. Thank you, Connie

Does anyone know what happened to Baan Isaan which was on the left hand side heading towards the airport. It used to be packed every night, and then suddenly everything was gone and the land was being developed into what's now being called Oriental Living.

Opposite Big Kiang is a nice restaurant. Big steel gate, large wooden tables, and good food for reasonable prices.

Seb Neur, about 200 meters south of the railway station is the best we've found in town.

hhfarang, we tried to find this place last week but couldn't see it. Which side of the road is it on? Is it between Kim's Kitchen and the station or further on? Don't suppose you know what soi it's near?

Probably me just not looking properly but any help appreciated.

It's on the same side as the RR station just a little way down the street headed south (not nearly as far as Kims and on the other side). There is a dirt parking area (best to park there) and then the shops start with a couple of small bars or clothes shops (they change frequently). Immediately after that is a fairly large, open air, Thai restaurant. The sign out front says "Seb Neur Kalisin" restaurant in English.
