What is 'Jailbroken', may I ask? Is this something one should be concerned about?

Jail broken, means it was purchased locked to an individual network, ie o2, vodafone. Etc. and has been unlocked by a third party. When apple first launched the iphone in the U.S, I got one and had it jail broken, to work in the UK, worked well for years, but beware normally phone unlocked this way cannot be updated with out them locking up again.

Not quiet right:

Jailbroken = apps fromother stores than Apple's can be installed. Mainly through the app store Cydia.

Unlocked = it can use any SIM card, not just the one of the original provider.

There is a piggyback unlock SIM chip from gevey.us that can unlock iPhones without Jailbreak.

Today Apple sells unlocked iPhones which can be used by any carrier. I just got an unlocked iPhone 4S. Last year I called my provider to unlock my 3G which they did since the 2 year contract had expired. It can now use any SIM and can be upgraded. However that generation is stuck with software 4.x something and will not get iOS 5. But it still is a great phone.
