Alternative Routes to & from Hua Hin to BKK
Alternative Routes to & from Hua Hin to BKK
Thought I' make this a new Topic as we can all put it into one place.
Seeing as the Flood water is now reaching Rama II in Bangkok and may be impassable very very soon to get down south, can we add updates as to how to avoid, which route and IF the Rama II road is open or impassable.
Possibly, seeing as it is reaching the festival period and a lot of peeps are making there way back & forth from Hua Hin (or elsewhere) to Bangers or from abroad, would be nice to keep others in the loop on how bad it is from peeps who have made the journey.

Good idea Lee.
Here's the link of a map which was posted on the general flood topic page. Not sure how often it gets updated. But the green line at the bottom left hand corner is supposedly the Rama II road.

Cheers Bonnielass, that is the Rama II.
Just seen this from Thai-ASEAN News Network:
The Bangkok governor pledges his agency will do its utmost to protect Rama II Road against severe flooding, given it is the sole passable route connecting the capital with the South.
Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said the water this morning was seeping up from the ground through drainpipes around the railway station in Bang Khunthien District and that he expects the floods will reach Rama II Road today, though the entire 11 kilometers through Bangkok will not be fully submerged.
Sukhumbhand said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, or BMA, will do its best to guard Rama II Road against floods as it is the single only south-bound route that is still passable.

Highway 340 expected to reopen today
Rama II Road may not be flooded 'right away'

The flooded Highway 340 is expected to reopen today for use as an alternative route to the south in case the deluge cuts off Rama II Road, Transport Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat says.
ACM Sukumpol yesterday said authorities would start draining floodwater from two sections of the highway where the floodwater was deepest.
This would take about four to five hours since the deepest area is only 45cm under water.
After pumping water from the road, the flooding on the highway from Taling Chan to Suphan Buri should improve and southbound traffic would be able to resume today, he said.
ACM Sukumpol said it was possible water could reach Rama II Road soon but that did not mean the road would be flooded right away as it depended on the direction of the water flow.
He said authorities have already removed debris along a 30km section of Rama II Road and asked the army to help clear five canals along the road to facilitate water flow.
As for flood prevention on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, ACM Sukumpol said authorities would install sand barriers on the road near the Din Daeng expressway entrance to prevent the deluge from advancing to the inner part of the city.
The minister said the government had called off a plan to create a 3km big bag barrier in the Taling Chan area in the western part of Bangkok for fear the barrier would cause floodwater to flow into Khlong Bangkok Noi, creating problems for surrounding areas, especially Siriraj Hospital.
Meanwhile, City Hall yesterday declared more communities in Bang Bon, Chom Thong and Bangkok Noi district as flood evacuation areas.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) announced the evacuation of people living in certain communities in Bang Khun Si, Bang Khun Non, and Arun Amarin sub-districts of Bangkok Noi district.
Evacuations were also announced for a number of communities in Bang Bon sub-district of Bang Bon district as well as more in Bang Khunthian and Bang Kho sub-districts of Chom Thong district.
The flood drainage efforts had not been as successful as expected in the western districts of Bangkok, namely Chom Thong, Bang Bon, Bang Khunthian, Thon Buri and Rat Burana, Chom Thong district councillor Suthichai Wirakulsunthon said.
He was speaking after chairing a meeting on updates on the flood situation in the five districts.
Up to 30 million cubic metres of floodwater was entering the districts every day but only about 20 million cu/m was being successfully drained.
As for the flood situation in eastern Bangkok where at least two main industrial estates _ Bangchan and Lat Krabang industrial estates _ are located, Anond Snidvongs, an academic on the Flood Relief Operation Command's water-draining committee, said the overall situation there was expected to begin improving in about a week.
The projection was made on the basis there would not be another massive amount of northern runoff coming into the capital, Mr Anond said.
BMA spokesman Wasan Meewong said floodwater levels in Nong Chok, Min Buri, and Lat Phrao districts fell by between 1-4cm yesterday due to round-the-clock draining of water.
Floodwaters also receded gradually in Khlong Bang Sue where a large number of water pumps have operated around the clock.
This canal is one of the main routes being used to empty floodwaters in inner Bangkok into the Chao Phraya River.

MINISTER SAYS RAMA II WILL BE INUNDATED:
Thailand’s Science and Technology Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi has claimed that some parts of western Bangkok, which include districts in which the Rama 2 Road passes through, will cut transport to the south as floodwaters continue to rise.
"The flood-free main road to southern region, Rama 2 Road, will also be flooded, and therefore the government needs to find other channels for people to go to the South and return to Bangkok,” he said.
He said that the government must act fast to provide assistance for flood victims throughout inundated regions in the west of the capital, which is expected to be affected for at least one month.

Update - A friend has just driven from Hua Hin straight to the airport on the usual route and never had any problems or diversions whatsoever.

Re: Alternative Routes to & from Hua Hin to BKK
I came back that way on Wednesday and no problems, but there is some chance that the south could get cut off - I initially went to Hua Lumpong station, and the story there (State Railway employees) was that you have to take a replacement bus service to Nakrom Pathom to catch the train - that the line from HLP itself is impassable. That bus takes up to 3 hours, so going back to Anusawari Victory Monument was easiest way out, and there was no problem other than the extreme weight of traffic up to Ratchaburi. If Rama 2 does get cut, I think there are plans for diversions around it but it might add considerably to journey times.

Lee..thanks for starting this topic..it is one I WILL be monitoring as I land at Swampy on Tues mornin'.
I've heard of the shuttle-bus from BKK rail station to Nakon Pathom...but cannot find any info on if the area around Halump-along is flooded or how to get there from the airport with 30kg+ of luggage & a disability..??
(most reports say the airport rail-link is no good if you have luggage..?)
Maybe get my 'Dragon' to charter a 6-wheel truck to tackle any pending Rama-water..55!

I would have thought that all things considered, a taxi would be your best option?

Re: Alternative Routes to & from Hua Hin to BKK
@US - Hua Lumphong area isn't flooded itself but there is a lot of mis-information. I had an argument with a motorcycle taxi guy who claimed that the MRT wasn't running because of flooding less than 2 minutes after I had actually arrived at HLP using it.
The thing with the airport connection is that there are few 'easy' places to make connections, and you could end up humping your luggage around quite a bit. Not knowing the extent of the disability, I would say simply, that the Airport train to Makkasan and change there to the MRT at Phetchaburi station is the quickest. Escalators are working at all 3 stations (Makkasan, Phetchaburi and HLP). Getting your luggage between stations might be the challenge even though it is a maximum of about 100m in both cases. The alternative is just taxi it to HLP, as Dannie Boy suggests.
