At least maybe one good thing has come from the floods:
Thaksin keeps low profile in Thai flood crisis

With a flood crisis rocking his sister's government, fugitive ex-Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra is lying low as prospects of a triumphant homecoming look ever more distant, observers say.

Seems strange. I thought the airport was high and dry?

The only thing I can find that's remotely relevant is the below:

The risk is still there to flood the airport, but nothing certain. The flight cancellations IMO are the result of booking cancellations. Pete

Yes Singapore Air have also cut some flights due to cancellations. I wait with baited breath for any announcements from China Air! If they leave me stranded in Schipol again I will not be a happy bunny....

The airport is actually built on quite low ground from what I have read, but they knew this so during construction they built a 2+ meter earthen flood wall around it to protect it. It may end up being an island but if the wall holds it isn't expected to flood. Several days ago I also read where they closed the sewer system underneath it so the water couldn't bubble up through that like it has in many Bangkok streets.

The info about Thai airlines came from Thai Travel Blogs's site/page, and also on Teak Door.
(Is the airline trying to sae face by mentioning that these cancellations are because of the flooding
& not low passenger-booking?).

^^ I'm sure that bookings will be down, but fairly convinced that the vast % would be cancellations. From a business side, we've certainly delayed trips where possible to Thailand. The insurance companies are having a field day and dropping coverage across the board. As such, our company is simply unwilling to send guys across.

Personally, I'd be there in a heartbeat!! OK, I'll be based in HH which is not effected in anywhere near the same scale as further north.........

It does seem as if these cancelled Thai Airways flights are due to economic considerations rather than anything else as they haven't cancelled every flight:

THAI flight cancellation

Thai Airways International regrets to announce that due to the current flood crisis in Thailand, the following flights will be cancelled as a result of the extra ordinary circumstances.

TG916 (departing Bangkok at 1330 to London at 1935) and TG917 (departing London at 2135 to Bangkok at 1555 of the following day) on 15, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30 November 2011, 06 and 13 December 2011.

We would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused. I f you need any further assistance concerning a cancellation, refund or re-booking of your reservation regarding these flights, please do not hesitate to contact your travel agent or our Reservations Office on 0844 561 0911.

Is it just me, or are some of these reports mind boggling:

Floods hit 494,893 Bangkok residents

http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews ... -residents

A total of 494,893 people in Bangkok’s 12 districts have been affected by the floods caused by runoff from the North, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration reported on Saturday.

The districts are Thaweewattana, Bang Khae, Don Mueang, Chatuchak, Bang Plad, Sai Mai, Nong Khaem, Lak Si, Bang Khen, Khlong Sam Wa, Taling Chan and Phasi Charoen, according to the BMA.

Sai Mai district had the largest number of flood affected people, at 87,229, followed by Don Mueang (86,561), Phasi Charoen (51,920), Lak Si (51,226), Bang Plad (51,055), Bang Khae (36,250) and Nong Khaem (35,852).

The "authorities" do not even know how many people live in Bangkok, never mind such an exact figure as quoted! :?

Water crisis 'over' in a few days

http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews ... a-few-days

Manas Kamnerdmanee, Royal Irrigation Department official, in a NBT morning report on flood situation expressed confidence that Khlong Bang Sue would hold the floods at bay, meaning that Din Daeng, Victory Monument or even Ratchadipisake Rd after Chao Phraya Park Hotel will not see any floods.

Flood heads would not penetrate into inner Bangkok unless pumps at Khlong Bang Sue brake down at the same time, at least 4-5 pumps out of 17 pumps installed there.

Another condition is that Big Bag gaps are not opened wider.

On the western front, he told the tv audience that Rama II Road would definitely be flooded as the water mass was huge and that the drains/canals under Rama II Rd would not take out the water as fast as the water flowing in. This could be seen that sois/roads linking with Rama II on both sides are now seeing rising flood level. Eventually the flood level on both sides of Rama II would rise up and inundate the road.

It is a good news that the Highways Department will soon be able to reduce flood level on Highway 340 to Suphanburi enough to let small vehicles pass. At the moment only high rise trucks can use this highway. This will be an alternative route to the South when Phetkasem [completely flooded for one week now] and Rama II are impassible.

The situation on Thonburi side is still dire as both Tha Chin river and Chao Phraya river levels are so high that Khlong Mahasawat, which links both rivers, cannot be drained into the two rivers effectively. Thus Khlong Mahasawat could not help lessen the water replenishment downstream at Rama II flood head.

The situation will be better after the high tide period recedes after November 15. Then the two rivers will flow into the sea much faster.

Those areas which have not been flooded except the western side should rest easy from now as the water crisis will be over in a few days when floodwater in the fields flows back into Chao Phraya and Tha Chin rivers.

It is not surprising that people go out and destroy barriers and flood gates when statements like this are released. :banghead:

Rama II may be spared closure

http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews ... -be-closed

Online news:

Dr Anond Snidvongs, GIS expert working for Froc, provided a daily flood analysis on NBT noted:

Big Picture: All provinces along Chao Phraya river see declining floodwater level and are now on the process of restoration/rehabilitation.

Areas that still see flood level rising are Bangkok and Thonburi.

Bangkok East now sees floodwater arrive at Khlong Prakanong, Khlong Prawase to be drained to the sea. The floodwater flow speed takes longer than expected, but it means that the government's effort to drain excess water to the East works.

Khlong Bang Sue can hold invading floods for 5 days now. BMA's canals, Bang Sue, Bang Khen, Lak Si, Lat Phrao work well together with Big Bag slowing down the inflow.

Lak Si, Don Mueang see declining water level. It will take about 7-10 days to drain main roads dry.

Phya Thai, Khlong Toey, Silom, Sathorn [economic hub] are unlikely to see any flood.

Bung Khum, Khlong Samwa are still worrisome. Bang Chan, Minburi see rising water, but the rising rate is now stabilising.

Bang Kapi may see a little water about 10-20cm deep from overflowing Saen Saep canal.

Khlong 8,9,10 closure helps a lot in slowing the inflow to Bangkok.

The western side (Thonburi) sees wider flood spread, but not deep.

Khlong Mahasawat canal sees declining water a little due to Royal Irrigation Department's effort in pumping water into Tha Chin river.

Khlong Thawee Wattana also sees declining water level.

However, water replenisment is still there in the north but will spread wider.

Khlong Phasi-Charoen is now stable, meaning floodwater has spread wider, but shallower.

Chomthong, Nongkhaem districts begin to see floodwater.

Rama II Rd is still navigable. No more consideration of digging up Rama II Rd.

Froc will try to expedite waterflow to Mahachai water retention area to be drained off to the sea.

If the effort to expedite waterflow succeeds, Rama II Rd will be flooded not so deep to warrant road closure.
May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil know`s you`re dead!
