New wall construction

Post by Dannie Boy »

I need to have a large perimiter wall built, that will be 2 metres high as it's finished height, but with the foundations below ground, that will be close to 3 metres in total. I have been quoted 3800 baht per metre length (i.e. 3 metres by 1 metre) using 12 mm reinforcing rods and 3,200 baht using 9mm bars. My questions is, do any of our "experts" know whether 9mm rods will be thick enough to handle the weight/height of the wall?

Many thanks

Does the wall have to hold preasure from some ground on one side? Otherwise a wall can be built with bricks. The Thais often use a mixture of alternating concrete poles and bricks. To avoid cracking a good foundation is key and some dividers in the finish.

However I'm no friend of walls. 2m can easily be overclimbed by two kids and any burglers. A fence and some plants do the same lame trick but are cheaper and nicer to look at.

The 2 metre height of the wall wont have any soil to retain but of course what goes below ground (which will be concrete anyway) will be taking the weight of the soil.

The wall will be constructed using blocks with concrete posts every 2 metres and a concrete cap along the entire top of the wall.

I know what you mean about the stark look of walls so for sure we will be planting all along the wall, but even in Thailand a 2 metre high fence of something like Bougainvillea which looks good and has very large thorns to deter burglars, takes about 2 years to get there.

Commenting specifically on the prices, those seem very high indeed. I am also looking to have a wall constructed and friends in Bangkok have indicated that 1,100 Baht per metre section x 2 metres above ground is the expected price that they would pay in the city. Obviously it is difficult to expect those individuals to come down to this location, but it's worth having a comparison. I would not pay any more than Bangkok's construction prices.

It seems you have been quoted the falang price. I have 2 meter high walls with a deep and wide foundation. Decorative pillar caps. Conduit for lights.

Concrete columns with concrete blocks is the standard. I paid 1800 baht per meter.I shopped around and that seems to be standard for Hua Hin.

To clarify I should mention that the 1800 bt was per linear meter for a wall 2m high. In other words, 2 sq meters @ 1800 bt.
